How the ATS score is calculated
The score is rule-based and transparent: the same file always gets the same score. It estimates how easily applicant tracking software can read your resume and how well it follows widely recommended practice — it doesn't judge you as a candidate.
| Category | Points | What we check |
|---|---|---|
| ATS readability & parsing Selectable text, reading order, columns, tables, text boxes, images, headers/footers, length and file type. | 20 | Selectable text, reading order, columns, tables, text boxes, images, headers/footers, length and file type. |
| Contact information Name, email, phone, location and a LinkedIn or portfolio link. | 10 | Name, email, phone, location and a LinkedIn or portfolio link. |
| Professional summary A short summary near the top that says who you are and what you offer. | 10 | A short summary near the top that says who you are and what you offer. |
| Work experience & achievements Job titles, employers, dates, bullet points that start with action verbs and measurable achievements. | 25 | Job titles, employers, dates, bullet points that start with action verbs and measurable achievements. |
| Skills A clear skills section with a useful number of specific skills, also shown in your experience. | 10 | A clear skills section with a useful number of specific skills, also shown in your experience. |
| Education & certifications Qualifications, institutions and dates; certifications when you list them. | 10 | Qualifications, institutions and dates; certifications when you list them. |
| Standard section headings Standard headings such as Experience, Education and Skills that ATS software recognises. | 5 | Standard headings such as Experience, Education and Skills that ATS software recognises. |
| Formatting, spelling & grammar Common misspellings, first-person wording, repeated words, very long sentences and consistent date formats. | 10 | Common misspellings, first-person wording, repeated words, very long sentences and consistent date formats. |
Checks that can't be applied to your file (for example, certifications when you don't list any) are left out of the total instead of counting against you. The score is an estimate: no checker can guarantee how a particular employer's ATS will read or rank your resume.
Your resume stays private
Your file is read on our server and deleted straight away. We don't keep your resume file or save its contents to an account — your report is held only in your temporary session so you can view or download it, and it expires automatically.
Scanned resumes
A scanned or photographed resume has no text that software can read, so we'll tell you instead of guessing a score. Export it from Word or Google Docs as a PDF (or upload the .docx), or run it through OCR first.

ATS Resume Checker FAQs
- No. Every employer uses different ATS software and settings, and people make the final decision. The score is an estimate of how easily software can read your resume and how well it follows widely recommended practice.
- It is rule-based and transparent: 8 categories (readability, contact details, summary, experience, skills, education, headings and language) with fixed points for each check. Checks that can't be applied to your file are left out instead of counting against you. The same file always gets the same score.
- No. This checker looks at your resume on its own. If you want to compare your CV with a specific job advert, use our ATS Checker with Job Description.
- Your file is read on our server to extract the text and layout, then deleted immediately. We don't keep your resume file or save its contents to an account; the report is held only in your temporary browsing session so you can view or download it, and it expires automatically when the session ends.
- If your resume is a photo or a scanned image, there is no text for software to read — most ATS can't read it either. Export your resume from Word or Google Docs as a PDF (or upload the .docx) so the text is selectable. We don't run OCR.
- No. Suggestions are based only on what is in your resume. Where a stronger bullet point needs a number, we show a placeholder for you to fill in with something true.
