CV maker or resume maker: what should you use?
In India, “CV” and “resume” are often used interchangeably for private-sector jobs. A recruiter may say “send your CV” even when they expect a one-page or two-page resume with contact details, summary, work experience, education and skills. For most corporate, startup, IT, finance, teaching and operations roles, a concise resume-style CV is the right choice.
A longer CV is expected in some situations. Academia, research, medicine, teaching posts with detailed eligibility, and some overseas applications may need publications, conferences, teaching experience, research work, registrations and a fuller education history. The difference is not the file name; it is the depth of information.
Use this page if you search for CV maker, online CV maker or make a CV online, and want a format that matches the application. If your target employer specifically asks for a resume, the same builder works; our resume maker focuses more on designing and reusing shorter job resumes.
Choose the right CV format
Reverse-chronological format is the safest default. It lists recent experience first, then earlier roles, education and additional sections. Recruiters understand it quickly, and applicant tracking systems can store it without unusual interpretation. Classic, Corporate ATS and Traditional templates suit this format well.
A skills-based or functional CV puts skill groups above dates and employers. Use it with care. It can help when you are changing careers or returning after a break, but it may also hide the timeline that recruiters want to check. If you use it, still include a clear experience section with employer names, dates and responsibilities.
A combination CV balances both approaches. You can open with core skills or a profile, then show reverse-chronological work experience. This is useful for experienced candidates who want to highlight a theme such as data analysis, account management or classroom teaching.
For examples of role-specific structure, compare the teacher CV example, data analyst resume example and accountant resume example. The section order changes because the evidence a recruiter looks for changes.
CVs for jobs abroad and photo-based formats
International CV practice varies, so avoid one universal rule. Gulf employers commonly expect details such as a photo, nationality and visa status, especially when the application form asks for them. Many UK and US employers prefer no photo and no date of birth. European practice varies by country, industry and employer.
MakePerfectResume includes templates that support these needs without forcing them on every CV. International has labelled personal details and a left-column structure. Passport Classic places a passport-size photo in the top-right corner. Traditional suits applications where a formal, text-first layout is preferred.
Use photo-based formats only when they fit the target market or employer instruction. For most Indian private-sector applications, a photo, date of birth, marital status and father’s name are usually not needed unless the form asks. The Indian resume format guide explains this in more detail.
Make a CV online step by step
Start with content, then design. Add personal details, education, experience, projects, skills, certifications, languages, volunteering and any custom sections you need. If you are writing an academic or research CV, add custom sections for publications, conferences, workshops, teaching responsibilities or research interests.
When you import an existing CV, upload the PDF or DOCX and review the extracted fields carefully. The file is read in the browser; the extracted text is placed into editable sections. Do not assume every date, line break or heading will be perfect. Check names, institutions, grades, job titles and bullet points before choosing a template.
A practical workflow looks like this:
- Enter facts first, without worrying about page length.
- Remove weak or repeated points.
- Write a profile that matches the role.
- Choose Classic, International, Passport Classic, Modern, Corporate ATS or Traditional.
- Preview at normal size and adjust spacing only after the content is final.

How long should a CV be?
For most private-sector roles in India, one page is enough for freshers and early-career candidates; two pages can work for experienced professionals with relevant achievements. Longer CVs are reasonable for academia, research, medicine or senior profiles where publications, teaching, projects or registrations matter.
Length should come from useful evidence, not repetition. “Responsible for sales reports” is weak because it does not show scope. “Prepared weekly sales reports for 6 regional managers using Excel dashboards” gives clearer context without becoming long. Our experience writing guide explains how to turn duties into stronger bullet points.
Before downloading, check whether every section helps the reader decide. Keep school details brief if you have years of experience. Keep publications and conferences only when the application values them. Use A4 for most Indian and international applications unless the employer asks for another size.
When the content is ready, make your CV online and preview the PDF before paying for download.
