How to write the summary

An accountant resume summary should make your finance scope clear in the first few lines. In the sample above, Rohan mentions GST, TDS, bank reconciliation, accounts payable and month-end close instead of writing only “accounts knowledge”. That helps a CA firm, trading company or manufacturing employer quickly see whether he matches the vacancy.

Keep the summary factual and avoid overclaiming. If you have worked mostly in a CA firm, say so. If your experience is in a company accounts team, mention the industry and volume only when the number is comfortable to share. You can write “monthly turnover of about ₹1.8 crore” in bullets if it gives useful scale, but never include your salary or expected CTC on the resume.

Weak: “Looking for an accountant job where I can use my skills and grow.”

Stronger: “Accountant with 4 years of GST, TDS, bank reconciliation and month-end close experience across CA firm and manufacturing accounts teams.”

For a complete structure check, use our guide to writing a resume, then adapt the order for finance roles.

How to write accounting experience bullets

Accounting bullets should show accuracy, compliance and speed. Duties such as “entered vouchers” or “prepared reports” are too broad unless you add the type of entry, frequency and result. In the sample, Rohan explains that he prepares GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B data, reconciles vendors weekly and closes bank reconciliations within the first four working days.

Use the same practical pattern explained in our work experience guide: action verb + accounting task + scale or result. Numbers do not need to be dramatic. A reduction in mismatch follow-ups, a due-date tracker, or a faster close checklist is enough.

Good examples:

  • Reconciled 5 current accounts every month and cleared ageing entries above 30 days with the plant admin team.
  • Prepared GSTR-3B workings for 12 clients and maintained purchase mismatch notes for CA review.
  • Built an Excel vendor tracker that reduced repeated payment-status calls by 20%.

Avoid saying “handled all accounts independently” unless it is true. Finance managers will ask detailed follow-up questions on statutory dates, ledgers, reconciliations and controls.

Skills and software for accountant resumes

Recruiters often scan accountant resumes for software and compliance keywords. Put Tally Prime, GST, TDS, Excel, bank reconciliation, accounts payable, accounts receivable and audit support where they fit your real experience. If you know Zoho Books, SAP basics or Busy, add them only if you can answer practical questions.

The skills list in the sample is short and job-focused. It avoids filler such as “hard-working”, “sincere” or “punctual”. Those qualities matter, but they are better proved through clean bullets and consistent employment dates. For help choosing what deserves space, read our resume skills guide.

Excel skills should be specific when possible: VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP, pivot tables, reconciliation sheets, ageing reports and conditional formatting. Do not claim advanced Excel if you have only used basic data entry.

Education, CA Inter and certifications

For accountant roles in India, B.Com, M.Com, CA Intermediate, CMA Inter and practical GST or Tally certifications can all be useful. Place CA Intermediate honestly: “Group I cleared” is stronger and safer than making it look like a completed CA qualification. If you are still attempting exams, mention it only if it supports the job and does not distract from work experience.

Freshers may include 12th commerce marks, college projects and internships. With four years of experience, Rohan keeps education brief and gives more space to work outcomes. If you are applying for a fresher role, compare the approach with fresher resume templates and the fresher resume guide.

Formatting and template choice

Finance resumes should be conservative, readable and easy to verify. The Finance template used above keeps the header formal and highlights key accounting skills without looking flashy. For online job portals or larger companies, you can also consider ATS-friendly resume templates with simple headings and a single-column layout.

Use A4, clear dates and consistent job titles. Do not add a photo unless a specific employer asks for it. Date of birth, marital status, father’s name and a declaration are usually not needed for private-sector accountant roles, though some traditional firms may request extra details in their own form.

Common mistakes to avoid

The biggest mistake is listing accounting terms without proof. “GST, TDS, audit, tally, excel” as a line of keywords is weaker than one bullet showing how you prepared GSTR data or supported audit schedules. Another mistake is mixing personal finance interests with professional work; keep hobbies short and never let them replace compliance or reconciliation evidence.

Finally, check dates carefully. If your articleship, assistant role and company role overlap, be ready to explain whether one was part-time, training or a full-time job. Clean chronology builds trust in finance hiring.
