How to write the summary

A teacher resume summary should quickly answer three questions: what level you teach, which subject or board you know, and what outcomes you have produced. In the sample above, Kavita does not write a vague line such as “hard-working teacher with good communication skills”. She names her level, “TGT English”, her CBSE experience, CTET qualification and the kind of classroom results she has influenced.

Keep the summary to 40–70 words. For school applications in India, mention CTET or state TET only if relevant to the role. Also include board experience such as CBSE, ICSE, IB or state board if the school has asked for it. If you are changing schools, the summary can mention the age group you handle and your strongest teaching method.

Weak: “Dedicated teacher looking for a challenging position in a good school.”

Stronger: “TGT English with 6 years of CBSE experience, CTET qualified, with strengths in remedial writing support, smart-class lessons and parent communication.”

For broader structure, compare this page with our guide to writing a resume, but keep your example page focused on proof from school work.

How to describe teaching experience

Teaching experience should show more than daily duties. Most teachers plan lessons, correct notebooks and attend meetings, so those statements alone do not separate you from other applicants. In the sample above, each bullet adds a measurable or observable result: assessment averages improved, participation increased, or a specific group of students received support.

Use the pattern from our work experience writing guide: action verb + teaching activity + student or school result. Numbers can be modest. A 10-mark improvement in a unit test, 30 students supported through remedial classes, or 90 students coordinated for an annual day is believable and useful.

Good teaching bullets can include:

  • Designed weekly grammar practice for Class IX and improved average worksheet scores from 68% to 76% in one term.
  • Conducted Saturday remedial sessions for 18 students, helping 13 pass the next internal assessment.
  • Coordinated parent updates for a Class VIII section of 42 students with monthly progress notes.

Avoid claims that sound too broad, such as “made every student excellent” or “promised 100% results”. Schools know results depend on many factors. Show your contribution honestly.

Skills, certifications and co-curricular work

A teacher resume needs a focused skills list. Put subject skills, classroom skills and school systems first. “Lesson planning”, “rubric-based evaluation”, “CBSE assessment”, “remedial teaching” and “parent communication” are stronger than a long list of soft words. See our resume skills guide if you are unsure which skills deserve space.

Certifications should be real and dated. CTET, state TET, B.Ed., Montessori training, NPTEL teaching courses and board workshops can all help when they match the vacancy. Do not add every webinar you attended; choose the ones that support your subject, age group or teaching method.

Co-curricular work matters in Indian schools. Debate club, annual day, house activities, school magazine, sports day coordination and Olympiad mentoring can show that you contribute beyond the classroom. In the sample, debate club and annual day work are included because they fit an English teacher’s role.

Education details for Indian school roles

List B.Ed. clearly, along with your subject degree such as B.A. English, M.A. English, B.Sc. Mathematics or M.Sc. Physics. For experienced teachers, 10th and 12th marks are usually not needed unless the school form specifically asks for them. Percentages are easier for many school administrators to scan than a CGPA, but either is acceptable if it is what your institution issued.

Keep dates consistent. A teacher with six years of experience should not show a degree ending after the first full-time teaching job unless it was distance or part-time; if so, mention it briefly in interviews rather than crowding the resume.

Formatting and template choice

For school roles, a clean one- or two-page resume usually works best. The Classic template used above is traditional and readable, which suits formal school applications. You can also browse professional resume templates or ATS-friendly templates if you are applying through online portals.

Photos, date of birth, marital status and a declaration are optional in India. Some schools may ask for a photo in their application form; add one only when requested or when the institution’s format expects it. Do not add salary expectations or CTC to the resume. Keep those for the form or HR discussion.

If you want to adapt the sample, build your resume and replace the fictional details with your own classroom evidence.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not turn the resume into a teaching philosophy essay. The interview is the place for long explanations of pedagogy. The resume should prove fit quickly with subject, board, class levels, qualifications and results.

Also avoid copying job-description phrases without proof. “Excellent classroom management” is weak by itself; “managed a Class IX section of 44 students with weekly behaviour and homework tracking” is clearer. Finally, check spelling carefully. A language teacher’s resume with grammar errors loses trust quickly, and the same is true for every subject teacher.

Frequently asked questions

A photo is optional for most private school applications in India. Add it only if the school asks for one or provides a format that expects a photograph. Otherwise, use the space for qualifications, subject expertise and classroom outcomes.
One page is enough for freshers and early-career teachers, while experienced teachers can use two pages if they have relevant achievements. Keep the first page focused on subject, board, classes taught, certifications and recent experience.
Add measurable classroom and school contributions, such as improved assessment scores, remedial class results, club mentoring, event coordination or parent communication systems. Keep the numbers plausible and connected to your own role.
Mention CTET in the summary when it is relevant to the school role or required in the vacancy. If it is less central, include it under certifications with the paper, subject and date.
