What an ATS resume builder can and cannot do
An ATS resume builder helps you create a resume that is easy for applicant tracking systems and recruiters to read. Many large employers and job portals use these systems to store applications, extract text into fields, and let recruiters search or filter by role, skill, location or experience. A human usually makes the hiring decision, and not every employer uses the same system.
That is why practical formatting matters more than chasing a mysterious score. MakePerfectResume does not provide an ATS checker, ATS score or job-description matching tool. It gives you clean templates, editable sections and a PDF with real selectable text, so your resume avoids common parsing problems. For a deeper explanation, read the ATS-friendly resume guide.
Formatting that usually parses better
An ATS-friendly resume is simple before it is stylish. The goal is to make your name, contact details, skills, experience, education and projects easy to extract and easy for a recruiter to scan.
Avoid:
- Important text placed inside images.
- Complex tables, text boxes or heavily layered designs.
- Contact details only in page headers or footers.
- Unusual section names such as “My Journey” instead of “Experience”.
- Icons used instead of words for phone, email, LinkedIn or location.
- Hidden white-text keywords or repeated keyword lists.
Use standard headings such as Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Projects and Certifications. Keep bullets short and factual. If a role asks for A4 PDF upload, preview the page and make sure the first page carries the most important information.
ATS resume templates in MakePerfectResume
Simple ATS, Corporate ATS and Minimal Clean ATS are built as single-column, machine-readable layouts with standard headings. Classic, Professional, Traditional, Executive, Finance, Modern Blue and Fresher Simple are also simple single-column designs that keep the reading order clear. The PDF is generated from the same design you preview, and the text is real selectable text rather than a flat image.
Use Simple ATS when you want the safest plain layout. Use Corporate ATS when you want a slightly polished look while staying single-column. Use Minimal Clean ATS when you prefer white space and subtle dividers. You can try the Simple ATS template, build and preview for free, then download the PDF with a one-time plan from ₹99.
Keywords: mirror the job honestly
Keywords help recruiters find relevant applications, but they must be truthful. Read the job description and use the employer's terms where they match your actual experience. If the posting says “accounts payable”, use that phrase rather than only “vendor bills”. If it mentions “React”, do not write “frontend technologies” and hope the system understands your meaning.
Spell out acronyms once when useful: Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), Goods and Services Tax (GST), Amazon Web Services (AWS). Put skills in a dedicated section, but also show them in experience or project bullets. The resume skills guide explains how to separate strong skills from weak keyword padding.
File format and portal instructions
A PDF with real text is accepted by most job portals and company career pages. It preserves your layout and is usually safer than a design that changes when opened on another computer. MakePerfectResume exports PDF only, so if a job post specifically asks for .doc or .docx, follow that instruction using another tool.
Do not upload scanned images of a resume. Do not rely on screenshots or photo-based files. Before submitting, open the PDF, select a line of text with your cursor and check that it copies as text. This quick check confirms that the resume is not just an image.
ATS myths to ignore
Some ATS advice online is too dramatic. Not all two-column resumes are automatically rejected; some parse acceptably, especially when built cleanly. Still, if you are applying through portals or to large companies, a simple single-column layout is the lower-risk choice.
There is also no universal ATS score that all employers use. Different systems, recruiters and job requirements behave differently. Hidden keywords in white text are a bad idea because they can look dishonest if noticed and they do not improve the human reading experience.
Write for the recruiter too
A resume that parses well still needs strong content. Use action, task and result in each experience bullet. For example, instead of “Responsible for reports”, write “Prepared weekly Excel sales reports for a fictional regional team and highlighted delayed payments for follow-up.” For more help, see the guide to writing resume experience.
If you are in a technical role, combine ATS-friendly formatting with role-specific project detail. The software developer resume builder page covers GitHub links, tech stacks and impact bullets for developer applications.
