How to write the summary
A software developer resume example should show what you build, the stack you use and the business result of your work. In the sample above, Rohan does not open with a generic line such as “hard-working software engineer”. He names Java, Spring Boot, React, cloud deployment and the kind of outcomes he has delivered. That helps a recruiter understand his level in a few seconds.
Keep the summary to 3–4 lines. Mention years of experience, primary stack, domain exposure and one or two strengths that match the roles you want. For Indian product and IT services roles, avoid adding expected CTC, notice period or personal details in the summary; those are usually captured in the application form or discussed later.
Strong summary line: “Software developer with 5 years of experience building Spring Boot microservices, React dashboards and AWS deployments for fintech and SaaS teams.”
Weak summary line: “Seeking a challenging role where I can use my skills and grow with the organisation.”
If you need a broader structure before drafting, compare this page with our software developer resume guide. The guide explains the full writing process, while this page shows how those ideas look inside a finished sample.
How to describe experience and impact
For a mid-level developer, work experience should carry the resume. In the sample above, each bullet starts with an action verb and then explains the technical work plus a measurable result. “Built Spring Boot microservices” is useful; “reduced average API response time from 620 ms to 310 ms” makes it much stronger.
Use numbers that you can explain in an interview. Good developer metrics include latency, defect reduction, deployment time, batch processing time, test coverage, active users, story points, support tickets reduced or manual effort saved. Do not invent dramatic claims. A realistic 20–30% improvement is usually more believable than a vague “improved performance greatly”.
Good bullet: “Optimised SQL reports and scheduled jobs, bringing nightly batch processing down from 95 minutes to 58 minutes.”
Weak bullet: “Responsible for database work and reports.”
If your role was in a service company, include the client domain without naming confidential clients. If you worked on product modules, mention ownership, collaboration with QA/product and release processes. For more examples of action-result bullets, see our guide to writing resume experience.
How to present projects and GitHub
Projects matter because they prove how you think beyond assigned tickets. In the sample above, the side project is small but complete: a finance tracker with authentication, CSV import, Docker setup and GitHub Actions checks. That is more convincing than listing five unfinished repositories.
Choose one or two projects that match your target job. For backend roles, show API design, database choices, background jobs, caching, testing and deployment. For full-stack roles, show the user flow, front-end framework, state management and how the UI talks to the API. Keep project links short and readable, such as github.com/your-name/project, so a recruiter can type them from a printed copy.
If you are building the resume in MakePerfectResume, you can build your resume for free, preview it and switch templates without retyping; PDF download needs a one-time plan from ₹99 when you are ready. Use the projects section, not a long paragraph inside experience, when the work is a portfolio or personal build.
Skills, certifications and technical keywords
A developer resume needs keywords, but it should not become a keyword dump. In the sample above, the skill list separates tools and concepts: Java, Spring Boot, React, PostgreSQL, AWS, Docker, CI/CD, REST API design and SQL optimisation. This gives applicant tracking systems and human readers the terms they expect, while the experience bullets prove where those skills were used.
Put your strongest and most recent stack first. If you used a tool only in college or in a tutorial, leave it out or move it lower. For Indian developer roles, Git, SQL, debugging, testing and cloud basics often matter as much as a framework name. Certifications such as AWS Certified Developer or Oracle Java can help when they support your actual experience, but they cannot replace project evidence.

Formatting and template choice
Developer resumes should be clean, scannable and easy to parse. The Tech Pro template suits this sample because it gives room for technical skills and projects without making the document look crowded. If you are applying through large job portals or company career sites, an ATS-friendly single-column layout can also work well; see the ATS-friendly resume guide before choosing heavy design elements.
Use A4 size for most Indian applications. Keep section names standard: Summary, Experience, Projects, Skills, Education and Certifications. A profile photo, date of birth, marital status, father’s name and declaration are optional in India and generally not needed for private-sector software jobs unless an employer specifically asks.
Common mistakes to avoid
The most common mistake is listing duties without outcomes: “worked on APIs”, “fixed bugs”, “handled deployments”. Convert them into proof: what API, what bug pattern, what deployment improvement and what result. Another mistake is mixing too many unrelated technologies. A focused Java/Spring/React resume usually reads better than a resume that claims every language from C to Python to PHP without evidence.
Also avoid confidential employer data, real client names you are not allowed to mention and salary details. Keep the resume truthful, compact and interview-ready. In the sample above, every bullet gives Rohan something concrete to discuss when the recruiter asks, “What exactly did you build?”
