A modern resume should feel current without making the recruiter work harder. The best designs use clear section breaks, enough white space and controlled colour. They are useful for software, product, marketing, digital, operations and business roles where you want to show energy but still look organised.
Modern Blue is the most balanced starting point: it gives a confident colour header while keeping the rest of the page straightforward. Minimal Clean ATS is better when you want a calmer design for online portals. Startup Style suits product teams, early-stage companies and founder-led businesses where a bolder sidebar feels natural.
If your work is project-heavy, Portfolio can bring projects higher on the page. Tech Pro suits engineering or IT profiles that need skills and projects to be visible together. For a more approachable look with an optional photo, Modern Sidebar, Photo Header and Minimal Photo can work for client-facing, marketing or business development roles when the employer is comfortable with photos.
Two-column layouts are attractive because they fit more on one page, but they are not always the safest choice. Modern Two Column is useful when your skills, certifications and languages are important but should not interrupt your work history. It can help a mid-level product manager, digital marketer or analyst keep the main story clean.
For large company portals, campus systems or any application where parsing matters, a simpler structure is usually safer. Use Minimal Clean ATS or Modern Blue when the job description asks you to upload a resume into a form. If you want more background on formatting for systems, read the ATS-friendly resume guide or compare the dedicated ATS resume builder.
Colour should guide attention, not become the message. Keep the accent to headings, tags or a header band. Avoid using several bright colours, especially for finance, healthcare or operations jobs. One controlled accent colour is enough.
For software and data roles, start with Tech Pro, Modern Blue or Portfolio. The software developer resume example shows how projects, tools and experience can work together. For marketing, content, social media or growth roles, Gradient Header, Startup Style and Sales can feel more expressive while staying professional.
For business roles where you need a current but conservative look, Modern Blue is often the best compromise. For referral applications, networking follow-ups or founder interviews, Startup Style can make your profile feel less generic. If you are unsure, prepare the same content in two designs and preview both before choosing.
You can start with Modern Blue, adjust fonts, spacing, colour and page size, and switch later without rewriting the resume. That makes it easy to keep one version for job portals and another for direct email or referrals.
Do not hide important facts inside icons, graphics or long sidebars. Recruiters still look first for role title, company, dates, skills and results. If the design makes those harder to find, choose a simpler template.
Also avoid making the page look like a poster. A marketing resume can have personality, but it still needs proof: campaigns, budgets, leads, tools, channels and outcomes. Use the resume skills guide to choose focused skills instead of filling every tag. A modern design works best when the writing is just as sharp as the layout.
