How to write the data analyst summary
A data analyst resume example should quickly answer three questions: what data you work with, which tools you use and how your analysis helps the business. In the sample above, Meera mentions MIS reporting, e-commerce dashboards, SQL, Excel, Power BI, Tableau and Python pandas. She also states the value of her work: faster reporting, campaign tracking and practical recommendations.
Keep the summary concise and evidence-led. Avoid vague lines such as “passionate about data” unless you support them with a tool, domain or result. If you moved from MIS executive to data analyst, show that progression in experience rather than hiding the earlier title.
Strong summary line: “Data analyst with 3 years of experience across MIS reporting, e-commerce dashboards and stakeholder analysis using SQL, Excel, Power BI and Python.”
Weak summary line: “Data lover seeking a challenging opportunity in a reputed organisation.”

Show reporting work as business impact
Data analyst experience should not read like a tool checklist. In the sample above, Meera does not only say she used Power BI. She explains that the dashboard reduced weekly reporting preparation time from 6 hours to 90 minutes. That is the kind of result recruiters remember.
Use metrics that are natural to analytics work: report turnaround time, dashboard adoption, number of stakeholders, records cleaned, queries automated, manual hours saved, conversion uplift, stock-out reduction or error rate improvement. If you do not have exact numbers, use careful approximations such as “about 35%” only when you can defend them.
Good bullet: “Built Power BI dashboards for sales, returns and category margins, reducing weekly reporting preparation time from 6 hours to 90 minutes.”
Weak bullet: “Made dashboards and reports in Power BI.”
Mention the business context behind the data. Retail, e-commerce, fintech, sales operations and customer support teams all care about different KPIs. A recruiter should be able to see whether you understand the problem, not just the software.
Skills, tools and keywords to include
For data analyst roles, your skills section should combine tools and analysis concepts. In the sample above, SQL, Excel, Power BI, Tableau, Python, pandas, data cleaning, A/B testing, KPI reporting and stakeholder management are all visible. This helps with search and screening, but the bullets still prove how those skills were used.
Place your strongest day-to-day tools first. If most of your work is Excel and SQL, do not lead with Python just because it sounds more advanced. If you have used Tableau only in a course, keep it after the tools you use professionally. For Excel, mention pivot tables, Power Query, lookup formulas or automation only if you can explain them.
Certifications can strengthen an analyst resume when they connect to your work. Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate and the Google Data Analytics Certificate are both credible examples. Still, a certification should support your dashboard or SQL evidence, not replace it.

Projects and portfolio evidence
A portfolio project helps when your current employer data is confidential or when you want to show skills beyond your job title. In the sample above, Meera uses a fictional retail dataset and documents the dashboard, DAX measures and assumptions. That makes the project safe to share and easy to review.
Choose one polished project over several unclear ones. A strong analyst project should explain the question, dataset, cleaning steps, analysis method and recommendation. For example: “Analysed repeat purchase cohorts to identify which discount bands brought customers back within 60 days.” That is stronger than “created dashboard using Power BI”.
Keep project URLs readable and professional. Use a GitHub repository, portfolio page or public dashboard only if it does not expose confidential data. If you use sample data, label it clearly as fictional or public. You can browse modern resume templates if you want a layout that gives dashboards and skills enough visibility.
Education, certifications and career transitions
A B.Sc Statistics, B.Com, BBA, engineering degree or postgraduate diploma can all lead to data analyst roles if the resume shows analytical ability. In the sample above, the B.Sc Statistics degree supports the job, while the certifications show continued learning. If you are from commerce, emphasise Excel, SQL, finance or business reporting. If you are from engineering, emphasise data structures, Python, statistics and projects.
Do not over-explain your entire academic history if you already have 3 years of experience. One degree entry with grade is enough unless the employer asks for Class 10 and Class 12 marks. Freshers can include more academic detail; working analysts should use the space for impact and tools.
Formatting and common mistakes
Data analyst resumes need clarity. Use standard headings such as Summary, Experience, Skills, Projects, Education and Certifications. The Modern Blue template suits this sample because it highlights skills without hiding the work history. If you prefer a stricter application-portal layout, try Minimal Clean ATS or browse ATS-friendly templates. Avoid screenshots of dashboards inside the resume unless a specific portfolio format asks for them. A resume should be readable as text. Also avoid confidential company data, real customer names and unsupported claims such as “improved business by 100%”. Write what you measured, what you changed and how stakeholders used it.
Finally, check consistency. Your current role dates, certification dates and project dates should all be realistic. If the sample above were missing the MIS role, Meera’s career growth would be less clear. A good analyst resume makes the data story easy to follow.
