When do government jobs ask for a CV?
Most large recruitments, such as SSC, UPSC, banking and railway exams, use an online application form, not a CV. But a CV (often called a resume or bio-data in the advertisement) is commonly requested for:
- Contractual and project posts in ministries, departments, state missions and government schemes.
- Research posts such as Junior Research Fellow, Senior Research Fellow, Project Associate and Research Assistant in universities, IITs, CSIR and ICAR labs.
- PSU lateral and experienced hiring, consultants and advisers.
- Deputation, re-employment and walk-in interviews, including posts for retired officers and ex-servicemen.
- Teaching posts in government-aided schools and colleges, guest faculty and contract lecturers.
Always read the advertisement first. If it gives a prescribed format or annexure, use that format exactly; a self-designed CV can be rejected. Use the layout below when no format is given.
CV format for government jobs: sections in order
- Name and contact details: full name exactly as in your 10th certificate, phone, email and correspondence address.
- Post applied for, with advertisement number and date.
- Personal details: date of birth, gender, nationality, category (only if claiming reservation), and father's name if the form asks.
- Educational qualifications: a clear list or table with exam, board or university, year, subjects and percentage or CGPA, starting with the highest qualification.
- Qualifying exams: GATE score, UGC-NET or CSIR-NET, CTET or state TET, typing or stenography speed, with year and roll number if asked.
- Work experience: organisation, post, pay level only if asked, period (from–to with dates) and main duties. Government reviewers check total experience, so dates must be exact.
- Research, publications and training for research and academic posts.
- Computer skills and languages.
- Declaration, place, date and signature.
Match every detail with your documents
Government selection committees verify each line against your certificates. Your name, date of birth, marks and dates of joining and leaving must match your mark sheets, experience letters and the online form. A single mismatch can lead to rejection at document verification. Use the same spelling of your name everywhere, and keep self-attested copies ready.
Write experience in completed years and months if the advertisement asks for "minimum 3 years' experience", and mention whether a post was full-time, contractual or part-time.

Format and design tips
- Use a formal, single-column layout and A4 size. Traditional and Passport Classic suit most government applications.
- Add a passport-size photo only when the advertisement asks for it.
- Keep fonts plain and sizes readable; many CVs are printed and filed.
- Two pages are acceptable for experienced candidates; research CVs may be longer because of publications.
- Sign printed copies in blue ink if the advertisement asks for a signed CV.
For private-sector jobs, a shorter modern resume format works better, and for local employers that ask for a biodata, use the biodata format.
