Translate service ranks and duties into civilian language

Corporate HR teams rarely know what a Naib Subedar, Havildar or JCO does, and military abbreviations make a CV hard to read. Keep your rank (it shows seniority), but add a plain explanation of your responsibility next to it. Replace service terms with civilian equivalents:

  • "Unit admin" becomes "administration for an 800-person organisation".
  • "Technical stores" becomes "inventory and asset management worth ₹6 crore".
  • "Section commander" becomes "team leader for 10 people".

Do not reveal classified details, operation names or unit locations that you are not allowed to share. "Various postings including Jammu and Kashmir and the North-East" is enough to show the range of your experience.

Show ESM status, DGR courses and documents

Write "Ex-Serviceman" clearly in your title or summary, with your rank, service, total years and date of release. Government and PSU recruiters need it because ex-servicemen get reservation in many posts; for central government direct recruitment it applies to Group C and Group D posts. Keep your discharge book, ex-serviceman identity card and PPO ready, because they are checked at document verification, and mention them only if the application asks.

List resettlement courses taken through the Directorate General Resettlement (DGR), and any civilian qualification earned during service, such as a degree through distance learning. Many security, facility and logistics employers hire through DGR sponsorship or the Zila and Rajya Sainik Boards, so register there as well as on Naukri and LinkedIn.

Choosing a civilian role after defence service

Pick a target role before writing the CV and shape it around that role. Security and facility management, logistics and fleet, administration, training, telecom and technical maintenance are natural fits, depending on your trade. A signals or EME technician should highlight equipment and maintenance skills; a clerk or store-keeper trade should highlight records, accounts and inventory.

Keep the CV to two pages, use a simple format and avoid long lists of every course since enrolment. Add a civilian job, even a short one, at the top because it shows you have adapted to corporate work. A common mistake is writing "looking for any suitable job"; a clear target such as "Facility Manager for corporate campuses" gets better responses.

Format for government and PSU job resumes

Government offices, PSUs, research institutes and NGOs running public projects still prefer a formal, single-column CV with plain headings: Personal Details, Educational Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Declaration. Many advertisements ask for details that private employers do not, such as date of birth, category (SC/ST/OBC/EWS) or father's name. Add these only when the advertisement or prescribed format asks for them, and attach a category certificate only if it is requested.

Make sure every date, percentage and name on your CV matches the online application form and your certificates exactly, because scrutiny committees reject mismatches. Keep self-attested copies of mark sheets, experience letters and certificates ready in the order they appear on the CV. If the advertisement asks for a declaration, end with a short signed statement that the information is true, with place and date. Security and facility management, logistics, administration, training, telecom and technical maintenance roles commonly hire ex-servicemen. Choose based on your trade and courses.
Many supervisory roles accept service experience with Class 12, but a degree helps for managerial posts. A distance-learning degree completed during service counts and should be listed.
