Start with the job, then choose the resume format
A good resume maker should help you make choices, not just decorate a page. Start by deciding what the employer needs to notice first. A fresher may lead with education, projects and skills. A data analyst may lead with tools, dashboards and measurable business work. A senior sales candidate may need targets, regions and account growth near the top.
Reverse-chronological format works for most people because it shows the latest role first. A combination format can work when you want to group strong skills before experience, such as analytics, stakeholder management or product development. A functional format hides the timeline too much for many recruiters, so use it only when you have a clear reason.
If you need a complete writing process before design, follow the how to make a resume guide. If you already have content, use this page to think through resume design, customisation and reuse.
Design a resume without fighting the layout
Resume design should make information easier to scan. In MakePerfectResume, your content stays separate from the template, so you can try different looks without rewriting your experience section. Modern Two Column fits more content by placing skills, languages and certifications in a side column. Modern Blue gives a confident colour header. Minimal Clean ATS keeps the page calm for online applications. Startup Style, Sales and Gradient Header add more personality while keeping the content readable.
You can customise 10 accent colours, 6 fonts, font size, line spacing, and A4 or US Letter page size. You can also reorder sections, rename headings, hide sections you do not need and add custom sections. For example, a developer might add “Open-source projects”, while a digital marketer may add “Campaign tools” or “Portfolio links”.
Use colour sparingly. A strong header or accent line is enough for most applications. If every heading, skill and date competes for attention, the recruiter has to work harder. The best resume design makes your strongest evidence easy to find.
For more template options, compare the modern resume templates and ATS-friendly templates before you settle on one.
Keep tailored versions for different applications
One resume rarely fits every job. A product analyst application may need SQL, dashboards and stakeholder work near the top. A business analyst role may need requirements, documentation and client communication. The facts may be the same, but the order and emphasis should change.
MakePerfectResume does not automatically tailor your resume to a job description. You choose what to edit for each application. Without a plan you can work on one resume at a time; the Monthly (₹99) and Yearly (₹499) plans include unlimited resumes and downloads while your access is active. If you want the detailed free-versus-paid breakdown, see the free resume builder page or pricing.
A practical method is to keep a master resume with all relevant roles, projects and certifications. For each application, duplicate the most suitable version, remove less relevant details and adjust the summary and first few bullet points. Keep the language honest; do not add skills just because they appear in the job description.
Version history helps when an edit goes too far. If a shorter draft loses important context, restore an earlier saved version and try again.
Tailor each resume by hand
Manual tailoring is simple but powerful. Read the job post and mark the skills, tools, responsibilities and domain words that genuinely match your experience. Then make sure those points appear in the right sections of your resume.
For example, a weak project bullet says, “Worked on dashboard project.” A stronger version says, “Built a Power BI dashboard to track monthly sales, returns and region-wise performance for a fictional retail dataset.” It shows the tool, purpose and scope. A software developer might write, “Created REST APIs for invoice approval workflow using Laravel and MySQL” instead of “Worked on backend.”
Use the resume skills guide to decide which hard and soft skills belong on the page. If you apply through portals used by larger employers, the ATS-friendly resume guide explains why simple headings, readable text and relevant keywords matter.

Pre-download checklist
Before you download the PDF, slow down for a final review. Many resume mistakes are small but costly: one wrong digit in a phone number, inconsistent dates, a broken LinkedIn URL or a file name that looks careless.
Check these items:
- Name, email, phone, city and links are correct.
- Dates use one style throughout, such as Jun 2024 or June 2024.
- Bullet points start consistently and avoid repeated verbs.
- Education marks use CGPA or percentage clearly.
- The PDF preview fits the intended length.
- The file name is professional, such as Priya-Sharma-Resume.pdf.
Proofread once on screen and once after downloading, if you pay for the PDF. The preview is designed to match the PDF, but the final check helps you catch spelling, spacing and page-break issues. When your content and design are ready, build your resume and keep the file name easy to recognise.
