Show plant scale, grade and GATE entry clearly

PSU and private recruiters both want to know how big the asset you handle is and how senior you are. Write the installed capacity, voltage level or pipeline length, and your grade (for example E1 Executive Trainee, E2 Engineer, E3 Senior Engineer). Mention that you joined through GATE, with the year and paper, because it signals a competitive selection.

  • Weak: "Working in maintenance department of a power PSU."
  • Strong: "Lead electrical maintenance of 220 kV switchyard and HT motors for a 2,600 MW station; cut electrical forced outages from 7 to 2 a year."

Do not disclose confidential plant data, tender values that are not public, or internal security details.

Applying to another PSU through proper channel

If you are already a PSU employee, most PSU and government advertisements ask serving employees to apply "through proper channel" or to produce a No Objection Certificate (NOC) at the interview. Start this early, because internal approvals can take weeks. Check your service agreement or bond too; leaving before the bond period may mean paying the agreed amount.

Some PSUs recruit experienced engineers directly at E2 or E3 for specific projects, and these advertisements list minimum post-qualification experience in a particular area. Rewrite your bullets to match that wording: "O&M of 400 kV substations", "commissioning of FGD systems" or "pipeline integrity". Keep the CV formal and two pages long, and make sure your experience dates match your appointment and relieving orders.

Translating PSU engineer work for private employers

Private power producers, EPC contractors, renewable developers and manufacturing plants value PSU experience, but they think in terms of cost, uptime and speed. Rephrase your work in those terms: availability improved, outage hours reduced, overhaul completed early, spares cost saved, contractors managed and safety record.

List the systems you know well, such as SAP PM or MM, e-procurement portals, protection relays, DCS or SCADA, and statutory requirements like CEA safety regulations and electrical inspections. Leave out PSU-specific jargon like internal department codes. Add any licence, such as an electrical supervisor competency certificate, and recent training. For more on writing results, see our guide on how to write resume experience.

Format for government and PSU job resumes

Government offices, PSUs, research institutes and NGOs running public projects still prefer a formal, single-column CV with plain headings: Personal Details, Educational Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Declaration. Many advertisements ask for details that private employers do not, such as date of birth, category (SC/ST/OBC/EWS) or father's name. Add these only when the advertisement or prescribed format asks for them, and attach a category certificate only if it is requested.

Make sure every date, percentage and name on your CV matches the online application form and your certificates exactly, because scrutiny committees reject mismatches. Keep self-attested copies of mark sheets, experience letters and certificates ready in the order they appear on the CV. If the advertisement asks for a declaration, end with a short signed statement that the information is true, with place and date. For writing the experience section, see our guide on how to write resume experience.
