Lead with your JRF qualification and its validity

Project JRF posts on DST, SERB (now ANRF), DBT, ICAR or CSIR schemes usually require CSIR-UGC NET JRF, UGC NET JRF, GATE or an equivalent national test. Selection committees check this first, so put it in the summary and again in a separate Qualifying Examinations section with the subject, session and month of result, for example "CSIR-UGC NET JRF, Life Sciences, June 2025".

Remember that a NET JRF award has a limited validity for joining as a fellow, so mention the result date clearly. If you qualified NET for Lectureship or Assistant Professor only, write that accurately; calling it JRF is a common mistake that gets caught at document verification.

Show lab techniques the PI can use from day one

A principal investigator hiring a JRF wants someone who can start bench work on the funded project immediately. List techniques you have actually performed yourself, not those you only watched in a practical class. Be specific:

  • Weak: "Knowledge of molecular biology techniques."
  • Strong: "Performed RNA isolation, cDNA synthesis and qPCR for 6 genes; analysed data with the 2^-ΔΔCt method."

Match your techniques to the project title in the advertisement. If the project is on soil microbes, move microbiology and culturing skills to the top; if it is computational, highlight R, Python, Linux and the databases you have used. Mention instruments you can operate independently, such as a thermal cycler, HPLC, spectrophotometer or laminar airflow cabinet.

Dissertation, publications and the interview format

Most freshers applying for a JRF have no paid work experience, so your M.Sc. or M.Tech dissertation is your main evidence. Give it a full entry with the title, institute, supervisor's designation (not personal phone numbers), duration and two or three outcomes. List publications, posters and conference presentations in standard citation style, and mark "under preparation" or "communicated" honestly.

Walk-in interviews for project posts are common. Carry a printed CV, the filled application format, original certificates and a set of self-attested copies. Keep the CV to two pages, and add date of birth or category only if the advertisement asks for them. Our resume for freshers guide explains how to order sections when education matters more than experience.

Format for government and PSU job resumes

Government offices, PSUs, research institutes and NGOs running public projects still prefer a formal, single-column CV with plain headings: Personal Details, Educational Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Declaration. Many advertisements ask for details that private employers do not, such as date of birth, category (SC/ST/OBC/EWS) or father's name. Add these only when the advertisement or prescribed format asks for them, and attach a category certificate only if it is requested.

Make sure every date, percentage and name on your CV matches the online application form and your certificates exactly, because scrutiny committees reject mismatches. Keep self-attested copies of mark sheets, experience letters and certificates ready in the order they appear on the CV. If the advertisement asks for a declaration, end with a short signed statement that the information is true, with place and date. For writing the experience section, see our guide on how to write resume experience.

Frequently asked questions

Many DST, DBT and institute projects accept a valid GATE score for M.Sc. or engineering graduates, but the rules differ by scheme. Read the advertisement and mention whichever qualifying test you hold, with the year and score.
Only if the application format asks for one, which some institutes still do. Otherwise a clean CV without a photo is perfectly acceptable.
Two pages is normal. Put qualifying exams, education, dissertation, techniques and publications first, and leave out school-level activities that do not relate to research.
