Write NGO programme results, not activities

Development-sector recruiters read dozens of CVs that say "conducted awareness programmes" and "worked with communities". What separates a strong Programme Officer is evidence of outcomes. For each project, state the thematic area, the donor type (CSR, foundation, bilateral or government), the budget, the geography and the number of people reached, and then one or two results.

  • Weak: "Responsible for livelihood activities in villages."
  • Strong: "Linked 1,350 SHG women to goatery and poultry value chains; endline survey showed household income up by about ₹18,000 a year."

If an outcome was measured by an external evaluator, say so. It adds credibility.

Show MEL, reporting and compliance skills

Programme Officers are expected to own the monitoring system and keep donors satisfied. Mention the tools you use (KoboToolbox, ODK, SurveyCTO, Excel, Power BI), the frameworks you work with (logframe, theory of change, results framework) and the reports you write (quarterly narrative reports, utilisation certificates, CSR impact reports).

Many NGOs handle CSR funds under Schedule VII of the Companies Act or foreign contributions under FCRA. If you have prepared documents for CSR due diligence or supported FCRA-related record-keeping alongside the finance team, add a line about it, without overstating your role. Proposal writing that brought in new funding is also worth a separate bullet with the amount.

Moving into a Programme Officer role

Fresh MSW, MA Development Studies or rural management graduates usually enter as Programme Associates or Fellows. Use your fieldwork placements, block placement and dissertation as experience entries, with the organisation, district, duration and what you produced. Mention any government fellowship or district-level programme you supported.

If you are moving from a CSR team, a government scheme (for example a state rural livelihoods mission) or field research, show how that work maps to programme delivery: targets, teams, budgets and convergence with departments. Languages matter a lot in field roles, so list the local and tribal languages you speak. Keep the CV to two pages and avoid heavy design; many NGOs still shortlist by email and print CVs for the panel.

Format for government and PSU job resumes

Government offices, PSUs, research institutes and NGOs running public projects still prefer a formal, single-column CV with plain headings: Personal Details, Educational Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Declaration. Many advertisements ask for details that private employers do not, such as date of birth, category (SC/ST/OBC/EWS) or father's name. Add these only when the advertisement or prescribed format asks for them, and attach a category certificate only if it is requested.

Make sure every date, percentage and name on your CV matches the online application form and your certificates exactly, because scrutiny committees reject mismatches. Keep self-attested copies of mark sheets, experience letters and certificates ready in the order they appear on the CV. If the advertisement asks for a declaration, end with a short signed statement that the information is true, with place and date.
