Match the project assistant CV to the funded project

Project Assistant posts are tied to a specific sponsored project, and the advertisement usually names the funding agency, the project title and the essential qualification (often a B.Sc., M.Sc., B.Tech or diploma with a minimum percentage). Read the project title carefully and reorder your CV so the most relevant skills appear first. A PI running a field survey wants survey and data skills; a PI running a lab project wants instrument and sample-handling experience.

Write the project and agency in each experience entry, for example "Project Assistant (DST-funded water-quality project)". It shows that you understand how sponsored projects work and that you can handle reporting deadlines.

Admin work counts on a project assistant resume

Many candidates list only the research tasks and ignore the paperwork, yet PIs value someone who can manage it. If you have handled any of these, include them:

  • Indents, quotations, comparative statements and purchases on GeM.
  • Utilisation certificates (UCs) and statements of expenditure.
  • Attendance, stock and asset registers.
  • Quarterly and annual progress reports to the funding agency.

Use numbers where possible: how many samples, surveys or forms, the value of purchases handled, the number of reports prepared. "Prepared GeM paperwork for equipment worth about ₹14 lakh" is far stronger than "helped in purchase work".

Short contracts, gaps and walk-in interviews

Project posts often end when the grant ends, so a CV with several 12 to 24-month contracts is normal. List each one with month and year, and add a short line such as "Project completed" so the reader does not assume you left early. If there was a gap while waiting for the next project, you can mention preparation for NET or GATE, or a short course you completed.

Freshers should add their M.Sc. or B.Tech project, internships and any field visits, using the format in our resume for freshers guide. For walk-in interviews, carry the CV, the prescribed application form if one is given, originals and self-attested copies of every certificate, and make sure every date on the CV matches your experience letters.

Format for government and PSU job resumes

Government offices, PSUs, research institutes and NGOs running public projects still prefer a formal, single-column CV with plain headings: Personal Details, Educational Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Declaration. Many advertisements ask for details that private employers do not, such as date of birth, category (SC/ST/OBC/EWS) or father's name. Add these only when the advertisement or prescribed format asks for them, and attach a category certificate only if it is requested.

Make sure every date, percentage and name on your CV matches the online application form and your certificates exactly, because scrutiny committees reject mismatches. Keep self-attested copies of mark sheets, experience letters and certificates ready in the order they appear on the CV. If the advertisement asks for a declaration, end with a short signed statement that the information is true, with place and date. For writing the experience section, see our guide on how to write resume experience.
