A resume headline is a single line that sums up who you are professionally: your role, experience level and main specialisation. On Naukri it appears as a separate "Resume Headline" field and is one of the first things a recruiter sees in search results. On a resume, it sits just below your name, giving the reader your professional identity before they read anything else.
A good headline is specific and keyword-rich, for example "Java Backend Developer | 3 Years | Spring Boot, Microservices, AWS". Below you will find a formula, more than 50 examples by role and experience, and the mistakes that make headlines easy to skip.
Headline vs summary vs objective
- Headline: one line, like a job title with key specialisations. It identifies you.
- Summary: three to five lines describing experience, skills and achievements. See resume summary examples.
- Objective: two to three lines stating the role you want, mostly for freshers and career changers.
You can use a headline together with a summary or objective on your resume. On Naukri, the headline and profile summary are separate fields, and both are worth filling in carefully.
The headline formula
[Job title] | [Years of experience or "Fresher"] | [2–4 key skills, tools or domains] | [Optional: certification or achievement]
Weak:
Seeking a good job in a reputed company
Strong:
Accounts Executive | 4 Years | GST, TDS, Tally Prime, SAP FICO
Recruiters search Naukri using job titles and skills. If your headline contains the exact terms they type, your profile is more likely to appear and to be opened.

How to write your own headline in five minutes
- Start with the exact title you want, using the same words as the job ads you are applying for.
- Add your experience as "Fresher" or a number of years. Recruiters often filter by experience.
- Pick two to four skills that appear most often in those job ads and that you can prove.
- Add a proof point if there is space: a certification, team size, target or notable employer type.
- Read it as a recruiter would: would someone searching for this role click on your profile?
Use separators such as "|" or commas to keep it readable. Avoid all capitals.
Naukri-specific headline tips
- Update your headline when your focus changes. If you move from manual to automation testing, the headline should say so.
- Keep it readable at a glance. One clear line, roughly 100–200 characters, displays well in search results and on mobile.
- Match the key skills section. The skills in your headline should also appear in your Naukri key skills and resume.
- Refresh your profile periodically. Small, genuine updates to your headline or summary can keep your profile current. See our Naukri profile tips for more.
- Avoid salary or notice period in the headline. Naukri has separate fields for these.
Common headline mistakes
- Generic phrases: "Hardworking professional seeking growth" gives no searchable keywords.
- Only "Fresher": add the target role and skills.
- Keyword stuffing: a headline with fifteen tools looks unfocused and is hard to read.
- Mismatched title: calling yourself "Manager" when your title is "Executive" may raise questions in background checks. Describe responsibilities in the summary instead.
- Outdated headline: a headline still saying "Fresher" after two years of work is common on Naukri and easy to fix.
- Spelling errors in tools: "Sales Force", "Java Script" and "Powerbi" can hurt search matching.
Frequently asked questions
Should I put a headline on my resume as well as Naukri?
Yes, it helps. Place it under your name in place of, or in addition to, a short summary. It gives recruiters an immediate sense of your role.
Can freshers write a resume headline?
Yes. Use your degree or target role, two or three skills and one proof point, such as a project, internship or certification.
How is a headline different from a job title?
A job title is what your employer calls you. A headline can combine your title with experience, specialisation and skills, so it is more searchable and specific.
How often should I change my Naukri headline?
Whenever your target role, skills or experience level changes, and at least every few months while you are actively searching.
Make the first line count
Your headline is the shortest part of your profile but often the most read. Pick the example closest to your role, replace the skills and numbers with your own, and keep it consistent across Naukri, LinkedIn and your resume.
