What government and bank recruiters check on a clerk CV

Clerk posts in government offices, courts and cooperative banks attract thousands of applicants, so recruiters look for quick proof of three things: the required qualification, computer and typing skills, and accuracy with records or cash. Put your typing speeds and computer certificates near the top. Many state and court recruitments specify a typing speed (often around 35 wpm in English or 30 wpm in Hindi or the state language) and a state computer certificate, such as MS-CIT in Maharashtra or NIELIT CCC in several other states.

Write the exact names of certificates and the issuing body. "Computer knowledge" means little; "MS-CIT (MKCL), GCC-TBC English 40 wpm" can be verified instantly.

Describe clerical work with volumes and accuracy

Clerical work is easy to undersell. Turn routine duties into measurable entries:

  • Weak: "Doing office work and maintaining files."
  • Strong: "Maintained the dak register and file movement for about 60 files a week; processed 2,500+ certificate applications on the state portal."

For bank clerks, mention daily customer volume, cash-handling accuracy, KYC drives, NEFT/RTGS and day-end balancing. For court clerks, mention case registers, cause lists, copying sections and the eCourts Case Information System if you have used it. For government offices, mention e-Office, noting and drafting, RTI records and service books. Leave out confidential details of customers or cases.

Contract clerks moving to permanent posts

Many clerks start on contract through an outsourcing agency deployed in a government office. Show both the agency and the office type, as in the sample, so the reader understands where you actually worked. Keep experience letters from both the agency and the office, since recruiters for cooperative banks and other offices may ask for proof.

When applying through SSC CHSL, state recruitment boards or cooperative bank exams, your CV is mostly used at document verification and interview, so make every detail match your online form and certificates. Freshers should list their degree, typing and computer certificates, and any apprenticeship. A one-page CV is enough for most clerk roles. If you have handled a public dealing counter, say so, because offices value clerks who can deal politely with citizens and customers in the local language.

Format for government and PSU job resumes

Government offices, PSUs, research institutes and NGOs running public projects still prefer a formal, single-column CV with plain headings: Personal Details, Educational Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Declaration. Many advertisements ask for details that private employers do not, such as date of birth, category (SC/ST/OBC/EWS) or father's name. Add these only when the advertisement or prescribed format asks for them, and attach a category certificate only if it is requested.

Make sure every date, percentage and name on your CV matches the online application form and your certificates exactly, because scrutiny committees reject mismatches. Keep self-attested copies of mark sheets, experience letters and certificates ready in the order they appear on the CV. If the advertisement asks for a declaration, end with a short signed statement that the information is true, with place and date.
