Lead with speed, accuracy and certificates

Computer Operator and Data Entry Operator posts are filled on measurable skills. Put your typing speed for each language, your data-entry speed and your computer certificates in the summary. Government skill tests often measure data entry in key depressions per hour (KDPH); for example, the SSC CHSL skill test for Data Entry Operator expects 8,000 KDPH, and higher-grade posts ask for more. If you know your KDPH from practice tests, mention it honestly.

Certificates such as NIELIT O Level, CCC, a DCA or PGDCA, and state certificates like MS-CIT in Maharashtra are frequently listed as essential qualifications. Write their exact names and issuing bodies so they can be matched against the advertisement.

Show the portals and software you actually use

Generic lines like "good knowledge of computers" do not help. Name the systems and the volume of work:

  • Weak: "Data entry and typing work in office."
  • Strong: "Entered PFMS payment data for 2,800+ beneficiaries with zero rejected batches; manage e-Office files for 3 branches."

Useful systems to mention, if you have used them, include e-Office, PFMS, GeM, state scheme portals, Tally, MS Excel functions (VLOOKUP, pivot tables), Google Workspace, scanners and basic printer or network troubleshooting. For Hindi work, state the font and layout (Unicode Mangal with Inscript, or Krutidev), because offices care about compatibility.

Contractual computer operator posts and freshers

Many computer operator jobs in government offices are filled through outsourcing agencies or district-level advertisements. Show the agency name with the office type you were deployed in, and keep experience letters from the agency. When you move to a new contract or apply for a permanent post, every date on your CV should match those letters.

Freshers should list their computer course, typing certificates and any training or apprenticeship in an office, cybercafe or CSC (Common Service Centre). A short project such as digitising a college library register is worth adding. Keep the CV to one page, use a plain format, and avoid photos unless the advertisement asks for one. Our resume skills guide can help you choose the right skills to list.

Format for government and PSU job resumes

Government offices, PSUs, research institutes and NGOs running public projects still prefer a formal, single-column CV with plain headings: Personal Details, Educational Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Declaration. Many advertisements ask for details that private employers do not, such as date of birth, category (SC/ST/OBC/EWS) or father's name. Add these only when the advertisement or prescribed format asks for them, and attach a category certificate only if it is requested.

Make sure every date, percentage and name on your CV matches the online application form and your certificates exactly, because scrutiny committees reject mismatches. Keep self-attested copies of mark sheets, experience letters and certificates ready in the order they appear on the CV. If the advertisement asks for a declaration, end with a short signed statement that the information is true, with place and date.
