Field investigator numbers that prove data quality

Survey agencies and research institutes hire field investigators for one reason: reliable data collected on time. Show that with numbers your supervisors tracked:

  • Interviews completed and daily average.
  • Back-check or re-interview match rate.
  • Refusal rate and completion rate.
  • Number of households listed or mapped.

"Completed 1,050+ CAPI interviews with a back-check match rate above 95%" is much stronger than "collected survey data in villages". Mention the survey type (health, nutrition, livelihoods, agriculture, labour) and the funding source type (government, multilateral, research institute) without disclosing confidential findings or respondent details. If a supervisor rated you among the top investigators or picked you to train new team members, add that too.

List survey tools, protocols and languages

Most surveys in India now use tablets or phones, so name the platforms you have used, such as SurveyCTO, ODK Collect, KoboToolbox or a custom CAPI app. Add specialised protocols if you were trained in them: anthropometry, biomarker collection, crop-cutting experiments, GPS mapping or household listing.

Research ethics matter to every serious employer. Mention informed consent, privacy and safeguarding training, especially for surveys involving women, children or health data. Languages are a big advantage in field roles; list every local language and dialect in which you can conduct an interview, because agencies often staff teams by language.

Moving from field investigator to supervisor or government posts

Field work is usually project-based, so list each survey with the agency, districts, dates and your role. Short gaps between survey rounds are normal; you do not need to explain them in detail. To grow into a Field Supervisor or Research Associate role, add tasks such as training enumerators, checking data on dashboards and writing field reports.

Government posts such as Statistical Investigator are filled through competitive exams like SSC CGL, which have their own subject eligibility, so your CV supports those applications only at the verification and interview stage. Freshers can list college fieldwork, dissertation surveys and any census or survey volunteering. Keep the CV to one or two pages; see our resume for freshers guide if you are starting out.

Format for government and PSU job resumes

Government offices, PSUs, research institutes and NGOs running public projects still prefer a formal, single-column CV with plain headings: Personal Details, Educational Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Declaration. Many advertisements ask for details that private employers do not, such as date of birth, category (SC/ST/OBC/EWS) or father's name. Add these only when the advertisement or prescribed format asks for them, and attach a category certificate only if it is requested.

Make sure every date, percentage and name on your CV matches the online application form and your certificates exactly, because scrutiny committees reject mismatches. Keep self-attested copies of mark sheets, experience letters and certificates ready in the order they appear on the CV. If the advertisement asks for a declaration, end with a short signed statement that the information is true, with place and date.
