Name your CAD tools and part types up front

Design engineer jobs in India are usually filtered by CAD tool first. Automotive OEMs and design service companies around Chennai, Pune and Bengaluru often ask for CATIA or NX, industrial equipment makers for SolidWorks or Creo. Put the tools you are strongest in at the top of your skills and repeat them in your summary.

Next, say what you design: sheet metal, castings, plastics, weldments, piping or machine assemblies. "Design engineer, sheet-metal and casting parts for truck cabs" is much clearer than "design engineer with knowledge of CAD". If you are in a design service company, name the domain of the client programme without revealing confidential details.

Design engineer bullets beyond "created models"

Most design resumes say "created 3D models and 2D drawings", which describes every design engineer. Add what the part was, how many you handled and what improved.

  • Detailed 60+ sheet-metal parts for a truck cab programme in CATIA V5.
  • Reduced bracket weight by 14% through rib optimisation.
  • Closed 35 DFM comments with toolmakers before tooling release.
  • Achieved 92% first-time-right releases in drawing audits.

Mention design reviews, tolerance stack-ups, BOM preparation and PLM release, because these show you understand the full design cycle, not only modelling. If you have worked with CAE colleagues, say what you changed based on their analysis.

Using projects when you have little experience

Early-career design engineers can use a strong project to make up for limited work history. A final-year design, SAE BAJA, Supra or Formula Student frame, or a self-driven product redesign can all work, provided you explain your exact role, the tools used and the result, such as weight saved or a factor of safety achieved.

Keep a small portfolio of screenshots or a PDF of drawings ready to share, and add the link only if it is clean and current. NPTEL courses in DFM, GD&T or machine design add weight. Keep the resume to one page, and use our B.Tech fresher resume guide to lay out projects clearly. Before applying, check that every drawing standard and tool name on the page matches what you could explain in a test.

Format and template for engineering resumes

Plant heads, project managers and HR teams at manufacturing, infrastructure and EPC companies usually shortlist from Naukri, LinkedIn or a referral, often on a phone between shifts or site visits. A clean, single-column layout with clear headings such as Summary, Technical Skills, Experience, Projects, Education and Certifications works best, and it also passes applicant tracking systems used by larger groups.

Lead each job with the plant, site or product you handled: "two-wheeler chassis line, 1,200 units a day" or "G+14 residential tower, 2.1 lakh sq ft". Then show results in numbers recruiters understand: OEE, PPM rejection, downtime hours, cost saved, schedule met, safe man-hours. List software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, STAAD.Pro, SAP, Primavera) and standards (IS codes, ISO 9001, IATF 16949) by their exact names. Keep it to one page under five years of experience and two pages after that. A photo and date of birth are optional; leave them out unless the employer asks.
