Separate process design from plant process roles

"Process engineer" means different things in India. In EPC and consultancy firms it is a design role: heat and material balances, PFDs, P&IDs, sizing and data sheets. In refineries and chemical plants it often means technical services: monitoring, troubleshooting and optimisation. In manufacturing plants it can even mean industrial process improvement. State your type in the title and summary.

Then name the units or plants you have worked on, such as crude distillation, hydrotreaters, gas processing, aromatics, fertiliser or pharma APIs. Recruiters in this field hire by unit experience, and a clear list saves them guessing.

Process engineer results: capacity, energy and deliverables

For design roles, show the size and quality of your deliverables: number of lines, equipment and data sheets, and how few client comments they received. For plant roles, show capacity, yield and energy gains in numbers.

  • Raised CDU capacity by 8% with a debottlenecking scheme needing only 3 equipment changes.
  • Sized 400+ lines and 35 pumps with zero major client comments at IFC stage.
  • Cut furnace fuel use by 6%, saving about ₹2.4 crore a year.

Mention HAZOP, SIL and safety reviews you have taken part in, and the standards you design to, such as API 520 and 521 for relief systems. Interviewers often ask you to explain one design calculation in detail, so choose examples you know thoroughly.

Simulation tools and getting started in process

List simulation and design tools by name and level: Aspen HYSYS, Aspen Plus, HTRI, PRO/II, Aspen Flare System Analyzer and in-house sizing sheets. Separate tools you use daily from those you have only trained on. Knowledge of international codes and client standards, such as API, ASME and company design basis documents, helps with Middle East and global EPC projects.

Chemical engineering freshers aiming for process design should highlight their plant design project with capacity, flowsheet and key equipment designed, plus any simulation coursework. A strong GATE score helps for PSU roles. Keep the resume to one page as a fresher and two pages later, with a clear project list for each employer.

Format and template for engineering resumes

Plant heads, project managers and HR teams at manufacturing, infrastructure and EPC companies usually shortlist from Naukri, LinkedIn or a referral, often on a phone between shifts or site visits. A clean, single-column layout with clear headings such as Summary, Technical Skills, Experience, Projects, Education and Certifications works best, and it also passes applicant tracking systems used by larger groups.

Lead each job with the plant, site or product you handled: "two-wheeler chassis line, 1,200 units a day" or "G+14 residential tower, 2.1 lakh sq ft". Then show results in numbers recruiters understand: OEE, PPM rejection, downtime hours, cost saved, schedule met, safe man-hours. List software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, STAAD.Pro, SAP, Primavera) and standards (IS codes, ISO 9001, IATF 16949) by their exact names. Keep it to one page under five years of experience and two pages after that. A photo and date of birth are optional; leave them out unless the employer asks.
