What recruiters want from a software tester resume

Manual testing roles attract a very large number of applicants in India, so recruiters scan quickly for proof of real testing work. They look for the type of applications you have tested (web, mobile, banking, e-commerce, ERP), the testing types you performed, the tools you used for test management and defect tracking, and whether you understand SDLC and STLC.

Mention the domain clearly. A tester with banking or insurance domain knowledge is easier to place on a client project than one with only general experience. If you hold the ISTQB Foundation Level (CTFL) certificate, put it in a certifications section and mention it in your summary, because many service companies list it as a preferred qualification.

Turning test activities into measurable results

Most tester resumes say "Prepared test cases, executed test cases, reported bugs". That describes every tester. Add volume, quality and impact instead.

• Weak: Executed test cases and logged bugs in JIRA.
• Strong: Executed 600+ test cases per release for a banking app and logged defects with a 92% valid-acceptance rate.
• Weak: Did API testing.
• Strong: Tested REST APIs in Postman and found 18 critical issues before UAT.

Other useful numbers are defect leakage to production, releases supported, devices covered and regression cycle time. Name the techniques you use, such as boundary value analysis, equivalence partitioning and exploratory testing, because interviewers ask about them.

Preparing a manual tester resume for automation roles

Many manual testers in India want to move into automation, and recruiters know it. You can prepare your resume for that path without overstating your skills. Add a project entry that shows real work, for example a small Selenium with Java framework for a demo site, or Postman collections with test scripts running through Newman.

Basic SQL is worth listing because testers often verify data in the backend. Freshers should include an academic or self-made testing project: write test cases for a public website, log sample defects in a free JIRA account and describe your approach. Keep the resume to one page, and replace generic phrases such as "hard working" with testing-specific strengths like requirement analysis and clear defect reporting.

Format and template for IT resumes

Most IT applications in India go through Naukri, LinkedIn, company career portals or a vendor's applicant tracking system before a human reads them. Use a clean, single-column or light two-column layout with standard headings such as Summary, Skills, Experience, Projects, Education and Certifications, so the parser can read every section.

Keep the resume to one page if you have under four years of experience and two pages after that. Put your tech stack near the top, but group it (Languages, Frameworks, Databases, Cloud and Tools) instead of listing thirty logos. Add your GitHub, portfolio or LinkedIn link only if it is up to date. Leave out photo, date of birth, marital status and a declaration unless an employer specifically asks for them.
