Put your nursing council registration up front

Hospital HR teams in India will not process a staff nurse application without a valid registration, so do not bury it on page two. Add a line under your name or summary such as "Registered Nurse and Midwife, Kerala Nurses and Midwives Council, Reg. No. XXXXX". If you have moved states, mention whether your registration has been transferred or endorsed with the new State Nursing Council, because many private hospitals ask this at the first call.

State your qualification clearly as GNM, B.Sc Nursing, Post Basic B.Sc Nursing or M.Sc Nursing, and the year you passed. Nurses applying for Gulf or UK roles should also add the status of any exam or licence they are pursuing, such as a Prometric, DHA or NMC UK step.

Describe ward experience with numbers

"Responsible for patient care" says nothing about your workload. Nurse managers want to know the setting, the size of the unit and how many patients you handled. Compare:

  • Weak: Worked as staff nurse in ward and did all nursing duties.
  • Strong: Cared for 8–10 patients per shift in a 42-bed medical-surgical ward of a 350-bed NABH hospital, including post-operative monitoring and IV therapy.

Also mention procedures you can do independently (IV cannulation, Ryle's tube insertion, catheterisation, ECG, blood sampling), audits you contributed to, and any extra responsibility like in-charge shifts, crash-cart checks or training juniors.

Certifications and skills that help a staff nurse resume

BLS is expected almost everywhere, and ACLS is a strong plus for wards that receive critical patients. Write the certificate name, the training provider and the year, since these cards must be renewed every two years. Infection control, NABH awareness and biomedical waste management training are also worth listing.

Freshers should add their clinical postings from nursing college (medicine, surgery, paediatrics, OBG, psychiatry, community health) with the hospital name and duration, because that is their real experience. Avoid listing soft skills like "caring nature" without proof; show them through patient-education or discharge-teaching bullets instead. Specialty exposure such as dialysis, oncology or labour room should get its own line.

Format and template for healthcare resumes

Hospital HR teams, diagnostic chains and pharma recruiters check eligibility before anything else, so make it easy to find. Put your registration details in the header or a short "Registration and licences" line: council name, registration number and validity, for example State Nursing Council, NMC or State Medical Council, State Pharmacy Council, Dental Council or RCI. Add life-support and safety credentials such as BLS, ACLS, PALS or AERB radiation-safety training with the year they were completed or renewed.

Use a clean one- or two-page layout with standard headings: Summary, Registration, Clinical Experience, Skills, Education and Certifications. Name the department, bed strength or setting (ICU, OPD, casualty, NABL lab, GMP plant) for every job. Leave out patient names and any identifiable case details. A photo is common for hospital roles in India but optional; date of birth and marital status are not needed. For wording help, see how to write resume experience.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Mention the State Nursing Council name and your registration number, or at least the council name with validity. Hospitals verify it before an offer, and it helps you clear screening faster.
Most private hospitals hire both GNM and B.Sc Nursing graduates as staff nurses. Some government and overseas roles prefer B.Sc Nursing, so check the eligibility line in each advertisement.
List clinical postings from your course with departments and hospitals, your internship, BLS training and skills such as vitals monitoring and medication administration. Keep it to one page.
