A fresher cover letter should do three things in about 250–350 words: name the role you are applying for, show proof that you can do the basics of that job using your degree, projects, internships or college activities, and ask politely for an interview. You do not need work experience to write a good one. You need specific examples and a clear link to the job description.
Most fresher letters fail because they talk about wanting "a challenging position in a reputed organisation" and say nothing concrete. Recruiters screening hundreds of off-campus applications respond to evidence: a project you built, an internship task you handled, a fest you coordinated. Below you will find a simple structure, opening and closing lines, and four complete sample letters you can adapt.
Do freshers really need a cover letter?
Not for every application. On campus, the placement cell usually shares your resume directly and a cover letter is rarely required. For off-campus hiring, it helps when:
- The job post or careers page asks for one.
- You are emailing HR or a startup founder directly.
- You found the role through a referral and want to give context.
- The role involves communication: content, HR, sales, teaching, customer success or consulting.
- Your degree does not obviously match the role, for example a B.Sc graduate applying for an analyst job.
A tailored cover letter is one of the few ways a fresher can stand out when everyone has a similar CGPA and similar coursework.
A simple structure for a fresher cover letter
Use four short paragraphs.
- Opening: the role, where you found it, your degree and one line on why you fit.
- Evidence: one or two examples from projects, internships, part-time work or campus roles, linked to what the job needs.
- Why this company: one or two honest sentences about the company or the role.
- Closing: availability, a thank you and a request for an interview.
Put your name, phone, email, city and LinkedIn (and GitHub or portfolio, if relevant) at the top. Address a named person if you can find one; otherwise use "Dear Hiring Manager".
Opening lines that work
Weak:
I am a fresher looking for a job in a reputed company where I can learn and grow.
Strong:
I am applying for the Graduate Engineer Trainee role advertised on your careers page. I completed my B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from VJTI Mumbai this year with an 8.1 CGPA, and my final-year project on solar inverter efficiency is closely related to your power electronics work.
Other examples:
- "I recently completed my B.Com from Loyola College, Chennai, and I am applying for the Junior Accountant position you posted on Naukri. During a two-month internship with a CA firm, I prepared GST working papers for 15 small business clients."
- "As a 2026 MBA (Marketing) graduate from a Pune B-school, I am excited to apply for the Management Trainee – Sales role. My summer internship involved building a dealer-visit plan for 40 retailers in Nashik."
Turning college work into evidence
Freshers often think they have nothing to write. In reality, you can draw on:
- Final-year or mini projects, with the tools used and the result.
- Internships, even short or unpaid ones.
- Hackathons, case competitions, quizzes and paper presentations.
- Positions of responsibility in clubs, fests, NSS or NCC.
- Part-time work, tuition, freelancing or helping in a family business.
- Certifications such as NPTEL, Coursera, Google or Tally courses.
Pick only the one or two items that match the job. A letter with one strong example beats a letter listing eight activities. Your resume should carry the full list; the resume for freshers guide explains how to present them there.
Closing lines
I am available to join immediately and would welcome the opportunity to discuss how I can contribute to your team. Thank you for considering my application.
If you are still in your final semester, say when you can join: "I will complete my final exams in May and can join from 1 June."
Sample cover letter for a B.Tech fresher
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the Associate Software Engineer role at Kestrel Labs, which I found on LinkedIn. I completed my B.Tech in Computer Science from a Hyderabad engineering college in 2026 with a CGPA of 8.4, and I have built full-stack projects using Java, Spring Boot and React.
For my final-year project, our team of three built a hostel complaint management system used by around 400 students during a one-month pilot. I designed the REST APIs, wrote the MySQL schema and added role-based login for wardens and students. I also completed a six-week internship at a Hyderabad startup, where I fixed bugs in an Android app and wrote unit tests that raised coverage for two modules.
Your job post mentions Java backend development and writing clean, tested code. These are exactly the areas I have focused on, and my code is available on GitHub for review.
I am available to join immediately and would be glad to complete a technical assessment. Thank you for your time.

Sample cover letter for a B.Com fresher
Dear Mr Agarwal,
I am writing to apply for the Accounts Assistant position at Agarwal & Associates, which I saw on Naukri. I completed my B.Com from Delhi University in 2026 with 78%, and I am keen to begin my career in accounting and taxation.
During a two-month internship at a CA firm in Laxmi Nagar, I recorded purchase and sales entries in Tally Prime for 12 small business clients, prepared GST working sheets and helped match bank statements with ledgers. I also completed a GST certification course and regularly use Excel functions such as VLOOKUP, SUMIF and pivot tables.
I understand that your firm handles audit and GST work for SMEs, and I would value the chance to learn from your team while contributing to day-to-day bookkeeping and compliance tasks.
I can join immediately and am happy to visit your office for an interview at your convenience.
Kind regards,
Pooja Sharma

Sample cover letter for an MBA fresher
Dear Ms Menon,
I am applying for the HR Management Trainee role at Nova Healthcare. I completed my MBA in Human Resources from a Bengaluru B-school this year, and my summer internship in talent acquisition has prepared me well for a generalist HR role.
At my internship with a mid-sized IT services company, I screened around 250 resumes for three technical roles, scheduled over 60 interviews and maintained the candidate tracker in Excel. I also drafted a short onboarding checklist that the HR team adopted for new joiners. On campus, I was the coordinator of our HR club and organised a panel discussion with four industry speakers.
Nova Healthcare's focus on nurse retention interests me, especially your recent employee engagement initiatives. I would enjoy supporting recruitment and engagement work in a growing healthcare organisation.
I am available to join from June and would welcome a conversation about the role.
Regards,
Kavya Menon

General fresher cover letter (any graduate)
Use this when your degree does not directly match the role, for example a BA or B.Sc graduate applying for customer success or operations.
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the Customer Success Associate role at Brightpath Edtech. I graduated with a BA in English from Jaipur this year, and I enjoy explaining things clearly and solving problems for people.
For two years during college I tutored school students in English and maths, managing a group of eight learners and keeping parents updated on progress every month. As events head of our literary society, I handled registrations and queries for an inter-college fest with over 500 participants, mostly on email and WhatsApp.
Your role involves onboarding new learners and resolving their queries quickly. I am comfortable with Google Workspace and Excel, I am fluent in English and Hindi, and I am ready to learn your CRM tools.
I can join immediately and would be glad to discuss how I can help your learners. Thank you for considering my application.

If you have very little to show yet, the resume with no experience guide suggests ways to build evidence quickly.
Sending your cover letter
- Through a portal: upload the letter as a PDF or paste it into the text box. Remove special symbols if the box shows plain text.
- By email: write a shorter version (around 150 words) in the email body and attach your resume as a PDF. The email for sending resume guide has subject lines and templates.
- Through a referral: mention the referrer's name in the first line, with their permission.
Name your files clearly, for example Pooja-Sharma-Cover-Letter.pdf and Pooja-Sharma-Resume.pdf.
Common mistakes freshers make
- Generic objectives copied from the internet. Phrases like "to work in a challenging environment" add nothing.
- Writing about yourself instead of the job. Every example should link to a requirement.
- Listing every activity. Pick the one or two most relevant.
- Apologising for being a fresher. Avoid "Although I have no experience…". Lead with what you have done.
- Including personal details. Father's name, date of birth and religion do not belong in a cover letter.
- Mentioning salary or bond preferences unless the employer asks.
- Copying a sample word for word. Recruiters see the same templates repeatedly; use samples only as a structure.
- Spelling mistakes and the wrong company name. Read it aloud before sending.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a fresher cover letter be?
Around 250–350 words, in three or four short paragraphs. It must fit on one page, and an email version can be even shorter.
Should I mention my CGPA or percentage?
Mention it if it is good or if the job post sets a minimum. If it is average, focus on projects and skills instead; the resume will show your marks anyway.
Can I write a cover letter for an internship?
Yes, and the same structure works. Focus on coursework, projects and what you want to learn, and mention your available dates. The internship resume guide covers the matching resume.
Final word
A fresher cover letter works when it is short, specific and honest. Choose your best piece of evidence, connect it to the job and ask for the interview. Make sure your resume supports every claim; you can build and preview a fresher resume free in the MakePerfectResume builder, and PDF download needs a one-time plan from ₹99.
