An internship resume is a one-page document that shows a recruiter what you are studying, what skills you already have and what you have done with them in projects, clubs or earlier internships. For college students in India, the best format puts education first, followed by skills, projects and activities, with a short objective at the top naming the internship you want.

Companies hiring interns do not expect professional experience. They want to see curiosity, basic skills relevant to the role and signs that you complete what you start. This guide covers the format, every section with samples, a full example and how to send it.

The best internship resume format

Use a clean, single-column, reverse-chronological layout. It reads well on a phone, prints well and works with applicant tracking systems on company career sites.

Recommended section order:

  1. Header: full name, phone, college email or professional personal email, city, LinkedIn, and GitHub or portfolio if relevant.
  2. Objective: two lines naming the internship and your relevant strengths.
  3. Education: current degree with expected graduation year and CGPA, then Class XII and Class X.
  4. Skills: technical tools and relevant domain skills.
  5. Projects: two or three, with bullet points.
  6. Previous internships or training: if any.
  7. Positions of responsibility and extracurriculars.
  8. Certifications and achievements.

Keep it to one page. Use a readable font such as Calibri, Arial or Lato in 10–11 point size, with 0.5 to 0.75-inch margins. The student resume templates follow this structure.

Header: keep it simple and professional

Example:

Rohan Mehta Pune, Maharashtra | +91 98XXX XXXXX | rohan.mehta@email.com | linkedin.com/in/rohanmehta | github.com/rohanmehta

Avoid date of birth, father's name, religion, full postal address and a photo unless the employer asks for them. Use an email address based on your name, not a nickname.

Write a two-line internship objective

Your objective should state your year, course, two relevant skills and the internship you want.

Weak:

Looking for an internship to gain industry exposure and learn new things.

Strong samples:

  • Second-year B.Tech Computer Science student skilled in Python and React, with two deployed web projects. Seeking a summer software development internship for May–July 2027.
  • Third-year BBA student with a consumer survey project and experience running the college E-Cell's Instagram page. Seeking a marketing internship in a D2C or consumer brand.
  • Final-year B.Com student with Tally Prime and Excel skills. Seeking a six-month articleship-style internship in accounts or audit.
  • MBA first-year student specialising in Finance, with financial modelling practice in Excel. Seeking a summer internship in equity research or credit analysis.
  • BA Psychology student with survey design and counselling observation experience. Seeking an HR or people operations internship.

Mention dates or duration if the company runs fixed internship cycles. More options are in the resume objective examples.

Education and skills

Education: your main section

As a student, education is the core of your resume. List it in reverse order.

B.Tech, Computer Science and Engineering — XYZ Institute of Technology, Savitribai Phule Pune University | 2024–2028 (expected) | CGPA: 8.4 (up to Semester 4) Relevant coursework: Data Structures, DBMS, Operating Systems, Computer Networks

Class XII (CBSE) — ABC Senior Secondary School, Pune | 2024 | 89%

Class X (CBSE) — ABC Senior Secondary School, Pune | 2022 | 93%

Tips:

  • Write "expected" next to the graduation year.
  • Mention the semester up to which your CGPA is calculated.
  • Add relevant coursework only if it supports the internship.
  • Include school marks for internships; they are commonly requested at this stage.

Skills: list what you can use, not what you have heard of

Group your skills so they are easy to scan.

Technical internship example:

  • Languages: Python, Java, JavaScript, SQL
  • Frameworks and tools: React, Node.js, Git, VS Code, Postman
  • Concepts: REST APIs, OOP, basic data structures

Business internship example:

  • Tools: MS Excel (pivot tables, charts, VLOOKUP), PowerPoint, Google Forms, Canva
  • Domain: market research, survey analysis, social media content planning
  • Languages: English, Hindi, Gujarati

Recruiters often ask about any skill on the list, so remove anything you could not discuss for two minutes.

Projects: show what you can do

Projects are the most convincing evidence on an internship resume. For each, include the title, tools used, a link if available and two or three bullets.

Technical project:

Campus Lost and Found Web App — React, Node.js, MongoDB | github.com/rohanmehta/lostfound

  • Built a web app where students post and claim lost items, with image upload and email notifications.
  • Used by around 300 students in the first month after the college tech club shared it.
  • Wrote REST APIs with input validation and deployed the app on a free cloud tier.

Business or research project:

Consumer Preference Study: Plant-Based Milk — Course project, Marketing Management

  • Designed and ran a Google Forms survey with 210 respondents across three colleges in Ahmedabad.
  • Analysed responses in Excel and found price was the top barrier for 62% of non-users.
  • Presented recommendations on pricing and trial packs to a faculty panel.

Design or content project:

Instagram Page for College Literary Society

  • Planned and designed 45 posts over one semester using Canva and a content calendar.
  • Grew followers from 400 to 1,900 and increased event registrations by about 35%.

Use action verbs such as built, designed, analysed, organised, presented and improved. Add numbers wherever you can.

Internships, activities and achievements

Previous internships, training and part-time work

If you have done a short internship, a virtual internship or industrial training, add it with the organisation, role, dates and two bullets.

Marketing Intern — Local Bakery Chain, Surat (remote) | June–July 2026

  • Created a WhatsApp catalogue of 40 products and managed customer queries during the festive season.
  • Tracked weekly orders in Google Sheets and shared a summary with the owner every Monday.

Part-time work such as tutoring, retail or event staffing also shows reliability and communication. If you have nothing here yet, simply leave this section out; see our guide to a resume with no experience for ways to fill the page honestly.

Positions of responsibility and achievements

These sections show leadership and teamwork, which many internship recruiters value as much as skills.

  • Technical Head, Coding Club — organised six workshops on Git and web development attended by 250+ students.
  • Volunteer, NSS — taught basic computer skills to 30 children at a municipal school over two months.
  • Finalist, Smart India Hackathon 2026 (internal round) — team of six, built a crop price alert prototype.
  • Secured third place in an inter-college case study competition among 40 teams.

Certifications should be relevant: NPTEL, Coursera, Google, Microsoft, AWS fundamentals or HubSpot are good examples. Write the name, issuer and year.

How to apply with your internship resume

  • Tailor for each internship: reorder skills and projects so the most relevant appear first.
  • Save as PDF with a clear name, such as Rohan-Mehta-Internship-Resume.pdf.
  • Write a short cover note or email: three to four lines explaining why this company and what you can contribute. Our guide on the email for sending a resume has templates.
  • Check portal requirements: Internshala, LinkedIn, company career pages and college placement cells may have their own formats or word limits.
  • Keep links working: test GitHub, portfolio and LinkedIn links before sending.

Many internship portals and company sites use applicant tracking systems, so avoid tables, text boxes and images for important information.

Common internship resume mistakes

  • Going beyond one page by adding school-level activities or long descriptions.
  • A generic objective that does not name the internship or field.
  • Listing skills without proof in projects or activities.
  • Skill bars and star ratings: they do not tell the recruiter anything specific.
  • Spelling mistakes in tool names, such as "Java Script" instead of "JavaScript" or "Exel" instead of "Excel".
  • Outdated CGPA: update it after every semester result.
  • Unprofessional email addresses or broken links.

Frequently asked questions

Should I put CGPA on an internship resume if it is low?

If the company asks for it, include it honestly. Otherwise, you may leave it out and let strong projects and skills carry the resume. Many companies will still ask for marks in the application form.

Can a first-year student make an internship resume?

Yes. Focus on school marks, any skills you are learning, small projects, clubs and competitions. Even one well-described project helps.

How is an internship resume different from a job resume?

An internship resume relies more on education, coursework and projects, and less on work history. It is always one page and usually includes school marks.

Should I add a declaration at the end?

It is optional. Some college placement cells and smaller companies in India expect it; most private companies do not need it.

Make your first application count

A good internship resume is short, specific and honest. Put your course and CGPA where they are easy to find, show two or three projects with real details, and tailor the top third for each role.
