Show the vehicles and systems you work on

Workshop managers first check what you have repaired: two-wheelers, passenger cars, commercial vehicles, tractors or heavy equipment. Write the vehicle category in your title line and summary, and mention fuel types such as petrol, diesel, CNG and, increasingly, EVs and hybrids.

Next, list the systems you are strong in: engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, steering, auto electrical, car AC and diagnostics. Dealerships value technicians who can work with scanners on BS-VI vehicles, because sensor and emission-related faults are now common. If you have only done general service, say so honestly and show you are learning diagnostics; it is the skill that moves a mechanic into a senior technician role.

Workshop metrics for an automobile mechanic resume

Authorised workshops track labour efficiency, repeat repairs, vehicles handled per day and customer satisfaction. Use those numbers.

  • Weak: "Did servicing of cars."
  • Strong: "Handle 6 to 8 cars a day with repeat repairs under 2%."
  • Strong: "115% average labour efficiency against standard times for 2 years."

Mention any recognition such as "best technician of the quarter", and if you train juniors, give the number. For multi-brand garages, show the range of jobs, like engine top overhauls, clutch jobs or alignment, since owners need technicians who can handle many brands without supervision. Name your diagnostic tools too, such as OBD-II scanners, multimeters and alignment machines, because workshops want someone who can use their equipment from the first day.

ITI MMV, OEM training and EV skills

The ITI Mechanic Motor Vehicle or Mechanic Diesel trade is the usual entry point. Write it with NCVT or SCVT, and add any automobile diploma. Certificates from the Automotive Skills Development Council and OEM dealer training levels carry weight with other dealerships, so list them with the year.

EV knowledge is becoming a plus. If you have done training on high-voltage safety or EV fundamentals, add it, but do not claim battery repair skills you have not used. Freshers should list ITI practical work and dealer apprenticeship details. For Gulf jobs, mention the vehicle types and brands you know, and add passport details only when the agency asks.

Format and template for technician resumes

Technician and trade hiring in India is usually handled by plant HR teams, contractors, manpower consultants and Gulf recruitment agencies who look at hundreds of resumes for one opening. A simple one-page layout with clear headings works best: Summary, Trade and Licences, Experience, Skills, Education and Certifications. Put your ITI trade (NCVT or SCVT), diploma, apprenticeship and any licence near the top, with the licence class and validity, because many employers shortlist on these details alone.

Name the machines, tools, vehicles or equipment you have handled, and list safety training such as first aid, fire safety, working at height or lockout-tagout. Add passport number, expiry date and ECR/ECNR status only when you apply for Gulf or overseas jobs and the agency asks for it; leave it off resumes for Indian employers. Skip the photo unless it is requested. For the basic structure, see how to make a resume.
