What recruiters check first on an electrician resume

Most electrician openings in India are shortlisted on four facts: your ITI trade and whether it is NCVT or SCVT, the year you passed, your wireman or supervisor licence, and the kind of work you have done. Put all four in the top third of the page. Write the licence class and validity, for example "Electrical Wireman Licence, valid till 2028", because contractors cannot legally put you on many jobs without it.

Then say clearly whether your experience is domestic wiring, commercial buildings, industrial maintenance or HT/LT substation work. A factory maintenance supervisor and a building contractor want very different electricians, and a vague line like "all types of electrical work" makes both of them skip you.

Turn daily electrical jobs into strong bullets

Electricians often write "attended breakdowns" or "did wiring work". Replace that with what you handled, how much of it and what improved.

  • Weak: "Responsible for motor maintenance."
  • Strong: "Maintain about 140 induction motors and 18 MCCs; cut monthly breakdown hours from 31 to 12."
  • Strong: "Completed concealed wiring and earthing for 35+ flats and shops."

Name your instruments (megger, clamp meter, earth tester, thermal camera) and the equipment you know: DOL and star-delta starters, VFDs, ACBs, DG sets or PLC basics. Always add a line on safety, such as LOTO, permit to work or "zero lost-time incidents", because supervisors treat electrical safety as a hiring filter.

Adapting an electrician resume for Gulf jobs

Gulf agencies hire electricians in large numbers for buildings, oil and gas and facility management. They usually run a trade test, and for Saudi Arabia many electricians must also clear the Skill Verification Program before visa stamping. Mention any such test you have passed and any earlier GCC experience with the country and years.

Add passport number, expiry and ECR/ECNR status only on the version you send to an overseas agency, not to Indian employers. Freshers should list the ITI practical work and apprenticeship details, including the company and the equipment used. Experienced electricians should keep the resume to one page and drop school-level details except the 10th or 12th board line.

Format and template for technician resumes

Technician and trade hiring in India is usually handled by plant HR teams, contractors, manpower consultants and Gulf recruitment agencies who look at hundreds of resumes for one opening. A simple one-page layout with clear headings works best: Summary, Trade and Licences, Experience, Skills, Education and Certifications. Put your ITI trade (NCVT or SCVT), diploma, apprenticeship and any licence near the top, with the licence class and validity, because many employers shortlist on these details alone.

Name the machines, tools, vehicles or equipment you have handled, and list safety training such as first aid, fire safety, working at height or lockout-tagout. Add passport number, expiry date and ECR/ECNR status only when you apply for Gulf or overseas jobs and the agency asks for it; leave it off resumes for Indian employers. Skip the photo unless it is requested. For the basic structure, see how to make a resume.

Frequently asked questions

An ITI Electrician certificate (NCVT or SCVT) is the standard entry qualification, but many contractors also need a state wireman licence before you can work on live installations. An apprenticeship certificate makes freshers much easier to place.
You can mention the licence type, issuing state and validity; the full number can be shared when the employer asks for documents. Make sure the licence is valid on the date you apply.
NCVT certificates are issued under the national scheme and are widely accepted across states and by Gulf agencies, while SCVT certificates are issued by the state council. Write whichever you hold exactly as printed on the certificate.
