What FMCG recruiters look for in a brand manager

Brand manager roles in India, especially in FMCG and consumer durables, are business roles. Recruiters look for P&L ownership, market share movement, launch success and evidence that you can work with sales, supply chain and R&D. Put the size of your brand (₹ crore revenue), the category and the regions you cover in your summary.

Most hiring managers also check your MBA institute and progression from Management Trainee or Assistant Brand Manager to Brand Manager. Show each title separately if you were promoted within a company, because promotions signal strong performance.

If you have rotated through sales as part of a management trainee programme, mention it briefly. Time spent with distributors and retailers is highly valued in brand roles because it shows you understand how a brand plan actually turns into sales on the shelf.

Writing brand manager bullets around share, margin and launches

Every brand manager bullet should connect an action to one of four outcomes: revenue, market share, margin or brand health (awareness, consideration, preference).

  • Weak: "Responsible for brand communication and packaging."
  • Strong: "Led packaging refresh that improved gross margin by 2.4 percentage points."
  • Weak: "Worked on new product launches."
  • Strong: "Launched flavoured milk range that reached ₹22 crore annual sales in year two."

Name your data sources, such as retail audit data or brand-track studies, so the interviewer knows your numbers are measured. If figures are confidential, use growth percentages and index numbers instead of absolute values.

Showing consumer insight and cross-functional work

Great brand managers start with the consumer. Mention the research you commissioned or used (concept tests, usage and attitude studies, focus groups, social listening) and one decision it changed. A line like "insight from rural shoppers led to ₹10 price packs now 31% of volume" is far stronger than "conducted market research".

Show how you worked across functions: briefing R&D on formulations, negotiating with procurement on packaging cost, aligning sales on scheme design. Keep agency names generic.

Use two pages if you have more than five years of experience, and keep academic details brief after your MBA.

Format and template for sales and marketing resumes

Sales and marketing hiring managers in India decide in seconds whether you can deliver numbers, so your format should push results to the surface. Start with a three-line summary that states your years of experience, the industry you sell or market in (FMCG, SaaS, real estate, BFSI, D2C) and one headline achievement. Follow it with Experience, Skills, Education and Certifications under standard headings so Naukri and company ATS software can read them.

For sales roles, every job should show target versus achievement, revenue in ₹ lakh or crore, territory size and the number of dealers, distributors or accounts you handled. For marketing and content roles, show campaign results, budgets, traffic or lead numbers, and add one portfolio or LinkedIn link instead of attaching samples. Keep it to one page under five years of experience and two pages after that. See how numbers are presented in our digital marketing resume example and check the ATS-friendly resume guide before you apply.

Frequently asked questions

A brand manager resume centres on one brand or category, with P&L, market share, pricing, packaging and launches. A marketing manager resume usually covers wider campaigns, channels, budgets and team leadership across several products.
It is possible, especially in startups and D2C companies, but most large FMCG firms in India hire brand managers from MBA programmes or promote them from assistant brand manager roles. Strong results in sales or trade marketing can also open the path.
Use percentage-point changes, growth versus category, or index numbers such as "grew share 1.7 points ahead of category". Avoid sharing exact figures your employer considers confidential.
