Say which kind of carpenter you are

Carpentry jobs in India and abroad fall into a few clear types: furniture and interior carpenters, shuttering or formwork carpenters on construction sites, door and window joinery, and finishing carpenters for hotels and offices. Recruiters hire for one type, so make it clear in your job title line, such as "Furniture and Interior Carpenter" or "Shuttering Carpenter".

Then list what you make or install and the materials you use: plywood, MDF, particle board, solid wood, laminate, veneer or acrylic. Interior firms value carpenters who can read drawings and take site measurements, because it saves a supervisor's time. If you can do polishing or PU finishing, mention it; many workshops struggle to find carpenters who can deliver a clean finish.

Carpenter resume bullets that show workmanship

Carpentry is judged on finish, accuracy and speed. Show all three with simple numbers.

  • Weak: "Did carpentry work in flats."
  • Strong: "Made and installed modular kitchens and wardrobes for about 30 projects a year, aligned to within 2 mm."
  • Strong: "Fitted out 140 workstations for a 12,000 sq ft office in 6 weeks."

Add how you save material, for example by preparing cutting lists, and whether you lead a team. Mention the machines you can use safely: panel saw, router, planer, edge-bander and power tools. Photos of your work can be shared on WhatsApp or in a short portfolio during the interview, but keep the resume itself to text.

ITI, skill certificates and Gulf carpenter jobs

Write your ITI Carpenter trade with NCVT or SCVT, or an NSQF certificate from the Furniture and Fittings Skill Council if you trained through a skill scheme. Many good carpenters learnt the trade in a family workshop; that is fine, but describe it honestly as "trained in family furniture workshop, 2012 to 2015" so the years count.

Gulf agencies hire both furniture and shuttering carpenters and usually run a trade test, so list the work that matches the job advertised. Add passport details only when asked. Freshers should mention ITI practical items such as joints, frames and small furniture they built. Keep the resume to one page in simple English.

Format and template for technician resumes

Technician and trade hiring in India is usually handled by plant HR teams, contractors, manpower consultants and Gulf recruitment agencies who look at hundreds of resumes for one opening. A simple one-page layout with clear headings works best: Summary, Trade and Licences, Experience, Skills, Education and Certifications. Put your ITI trade (NCVT or SCVT), diploma, apprenticeship and any licence near the top, with the licence class and validity, because many employers shortlist on these details alone.

Name the machines, tools, vehicles or equipment you have handled, and list safety training such as first aid, fire safety, working at height or lockout-tagout. Add passport number, expiry date and ECR/ECNR status only when you apply for Gulf or overseas jobs and the agency asks for it; leave it off resumes for Indian employers. Skip the photo unless it is requested. For the basic structure, see how to make a resume.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, many employers hire on skill and trade tests. Write your years of workshop experience clearly, and consider an NSQF skill certificate to strengthen applications to companies and Gulf agencies.
List both if you have done both, but put the one that matches the job first. Furniture and shuttering carpentry need different skills, and recruiters want to see the relevant one clearly.
Interior and fit-out companies strongly prefer carpenters who can read 2D drawings and take measurements. If you can, mention it in your summary and skills.
