  • Operate 2 CNC turning centres and 1 VMC (Fanuc 0i-TF and 0i-MF) machining steering and gearbox components for two-wheeler OEMs.
  • Set tool and work offsets, change inserts and edit simple G-code programs, producing about 420 parts a shift against a target of 400.
  • Reduced cycle time on a gear blank from 96 to 81 seconds with the setter by optimising tool path and insert grade.
  • Record first-piece and hourly inspection on control charts; customer rejection on my line stayed at 0 PPM for 11 months.

List the CNC machines, controls and parts you run

Plant HR teams shortlist CNC operators by machine type and control system. Write exactly what you have run: CNC turning centre, VMC, HMC, CNC grinding or a turn-mill machine, and the control, such as Fanuc, Siemens or Mitsubishi. Add the kind of parts you machine (shafts, gear blanks, housings, flanges) and the material (steel, cast iron, aluminium), because a supervisor can then picture your work immediately.

Be honest about your level. An operator who loads parts and checks dimensions is different from one who sets offsets, changes inserts and edits programs. If you can do the second, say so clearly; it is the main step between operator and setter roles and often decides your salary band.

Production and quality numbers for a CNC operator

CNC shops run on targets, so your bullets should too. Good measures are parts per shift against target, cycle time, rejection or rework in PPM, and machine downtime.

  • Weak: "Operated CNC machine as per instructions."
  • Strong: "Produce about 420 parts a shift against a target of 400 on 2 turning centres."
  • Strong: "Helped cut gear-blank cycle time from 96 to 81 seconds."

Mention the instruments you use for inspection, such as micrometers, bore gauges, height gauges, thread gauges and air gauges, and whether you fill control charts. Add 5S, TPM or Kaizen work in one line, since auto-component plants audit these regularly.

ITI, training and the next step for CNC operators

Most CNC operators come from ITI Machinist, Turner or Fitter trades, while some hold a mechanical diploma. Write your trade with NCVT or SCVT and add short courses from MSME Tool Rooms or similar training centres on CNC programming. These tell employers you can learn setting work faster.

Freshers should describe ITI practical work, any NAPS or NEEM apprenticeship and the machines used during training. Experienced operators aiming for setter or programmer roles should add a line about program editing, fixture changeover time and training new operators. Keep it to one page; long lists of every measuring tool and every customer part number only make the resume harder to scan.

Format and template for technician resumes

Technician and trade hiring in India is usually handled by plant HR teams, contractors, manpower consultants and Gulf recruitment agencies who look at hundreds of resumes for one opening. A simple one-page layout with clear headings works best: Summary, Trade and Licences, Experience, Skills, Education and Certifications. Put your ITI trade (NCVT or SCVT), diploma, apprenticeship and any licence near the top, with the licence class and validity, because many employers shortlist on these details alone.

Name the machines, tools, vehicles or equipment you have handled, and list safety training such as first aid, fire safety, working at height or lockout-tagout. Add passport number, expiry date and ECR/ECNR status only when you apply for Gulf or overseas jobs and the agency asks for it; leave it off resumes for Indian employers. Skip the photo unless it is requested. For the basic structure, see how to make a resume.

Frequently asked questions

ITI Machinist and Turner are the most relevant trades, and ITI Fitter is also accepted by many plants. A short CNC programming course adds weight to any of them.
Only if you can read and edit simple programs on the machine. Interviewers often ask you to explain a few codes or change an offset, so list only what you actually do.
One page is enough. Focus on machines, controls, parts, targets and quality results rather than general objectives.
