What hiring managers want from an IT support engineer

IT support hiring managers in India want to know three things: what you can fix, how many users you support, and whether you meet SLAs while staying polite under pressure. Your summary should answer all three, for example "IT support engineer with 1 year of L1/L2 experience supporting 350 users, 96% of tickets within SLA".

List the systems you actually support: Windows versions, Active Directory, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, printers, VPN clients, ticketing tools such as ServiceNow, Freshservice or Jira Service Management, and remote tools. Mention whether you handle on-site, remote or hybrid support, because many roles in IT services companies involve client-site visits or rotational shifts.

Ticket, SLA and user-satisfaction numbers

Support work produces plenty of numbers, and using them turns ordinary duties into achievements.

  • Weak: Provided desktop support to users.
  • Strong: Resolved 25–30 tickets a day for 350 users with 96% closed within SLA.
  • Weak: Did laptop installation.
  • Strong: Imaged and deployed 120 Windows 11 laptops with Intune policies during an office expansion.

Other useful measures are first-call resolution rate, satisfaction scores, assets tracked and repeat tickets reduced through documentation. If you trained users or wrote knowledge-base articles, add a bullet, because it shows you think beyond single tickets and are ready for an L2 or team-lead path.

IT support resume tips for freshers

Freshers with a BCA, B.Sc. IT, diploma or ITI background can compete well for IT support roles if they show practical skill. Add a home-lab project, such as a Windows Server domain on VirtualBox with DNS, DHCP and Group Policy, or describe hardware and network troubleshooting you handled during an internship or for your college lab.

Entry-level certifications such as CompTIA A+, Microsoft 365 Fundamentals or the Google IT Support Professional Certificate help at screening; ITIL Foundation becomes useful once you work with formal ticketing processes. Mention languages, because support roles involve talking to users, and regional languages are a genuine advantage. Format and template for IT resumes

Most IT applications in India go through Naukri, LinkedIn, company career portals or a vendor's applicant tracking system before a human reads them. Use a clean, single-column or light two-column layout with standard headings such as Summary, Skills, Experience, Projects, Education and Certifications, so the parser can read every section.

Keep the resume to one page if you have under four years of experience and two pages after that. Put your tech stack near the top, but group it (Languages, Frameworks, Databases, Cloud and Tools) instead of listing thirty logos. Add your GitHub, portfolio or LinkedIn link only if it is up to date. Leave out photo, date of birth, marital status and a declaration unless an employer specifically asks for them.
