What GET recruiters look for in a mechanical engineering fresher

Graduate engineer trainee programmes in automotive, auto-component, heavy engineering and process plants hire mechanical freshers into production, quality, maintenance or design. Recruiters screen for three signals: academic consistency, exposure to a real plant, and hands-on technical work such as a BAJA, SUPRA or Formula Student team, a sponsored project or a fabrication project.

State the function you want in your summary, because a resume aimed at "production, quality or design" is read differently from one aimed only at design. Then make sure your internship and projects support that choice. A quality-focused resume should mention inspection, gauges, rejection analysis and 7 QC tools; a design-focused one should lead with CAD, GD&T and analysis.

Turning internships and BAJA work into engineering results

Mechanical freshers often write "did internship in quality department" or "member of BAJA team". Recruiters want to know what you changed or delivered:

  • "Built a Pareto of 3 months of rejection data; porosity caused 46% of rejections."
  • "Helped cut porosity rejections from 4.1% to 2.6% through a why-why analysis."
  • "Designed a double-wishbone suspension in SolidWorks and reduced weight by 3.4 kg."

Use plant language such as PPM, rejection rate, cycle time, OEE and Kaizen correctly, and only where it applies. Interviewers will ask how you calculated each number, so keep your project notes and drawings ready.

CAD, certifications and what mechanical freshers should leave out

List CAD and analysis software you can actually use under time pressure: SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CATIA, Creo or ANSYS. Many design interviews include a short modelling test. A CSWA or similar certification and NPTEL courses in manufacturing, machine design or thermodynamics add weight, especially if your college is not a regular stop for core companies.

Leave out generic items such as "MS Paint" or "internet browsing", and avoid long hobby lists. Do include Class 10 and Class 12 marks, as core companies and PSUs commonly use a 60% cut-off, and mention your GATE score if you have one, since several PSUs recruit through it. Compare your layout with the B.Tech fresher example for a balanced one-page structure.

Format and template for fresher resumes

Recruiters at campus drives and on Naukri spend only a few seconds on a fresher resume, so keep it to one page. Because you have little or no work history, put Education right after a two-line summary: degree, college, university, year and CGPA or percentage, followed by Class 12 and Class 10 rows with board and marks. Many Indian employers still screen on a 60% or 6.0 CGPA cut-off across 10th, 12th and graduation, so missing marks look like you are hiding something.

Next come Projects and Internships, which is where you prove skills. Give each project a title, your role, the tools used and one measurable result. Then add certifications (NPTEL, Tally, NSDC, Google), skills, achievements and languages. Before a campus placement season, build one master resume and adjust the summary and skill order for each job description. See our resume for freshers guide and the fresher templates.

Turn this sample into your own resume

Use this sample for structure and wording ideas, then replace every line with your own employers, dates, tools and results. Interviewers can ask about anything on your resume, so keep each claim specific and true.

Frequently asked questions

Many do, but use a separate resume for IT roles that leads with programming and aptitude. Mixing CAD and coding on one page weakens both applications.
Yes. Core companies value team vehicle projects because they show design, fabrication and testing under deadlines. Mention your sub-system and one measurable result.
Mention it if it is a valid and reasonable score, particularly when applying to PSUs or research-linked roles. Otherwise leave it out.
