Motion graphics designer vs video editor: position yourself clearly
Many Indian job listings mix up motion design and video editing. Make your profile clear in the first line: are you a design-led animator who builds graphics from scratch, or an editor who adds titles and transitions? "Motion graphics designer creating explainers, social ads and UI animations in After Effects and Cinema 4D" tells an agency creative director exactly what you do.
Name the industries and formats you have worked on, such as fintech explainers, D2C performance ads, broadcast packaging for news channels or app micro-interactions. Product companies, ad agencies and TV channels each hire motion designers for different reasons, so match your summary to the employer.
Motion design bullets that show output and business results
Count what you deliver and, where possible, link it to a result your client or team measured. Useful numbers include ads per month, video length, A/B test outcomes, file sizes and time saved for the wider team.
- Weak: "Made animations and videos for clients."
- Strong: "Produce 15 to 20 animated social ads a month for fintech and D2C brands."
- Strong: "Explainer video lifted landing-page sign-ups by 18% in an A/B test."
Building reusable templates with Essential Graphics or expression controls is worth a bullet, because it shows you think about production efficiency, not only visuals. Mention delivery formats too, such as vertical, square and widescreen cuts for different platforms.
Reel, tools and early-career motion designers
Keep your reel to 45 to 60 seconds, cut to music, with your best two pieces in the first ten seconds. Add a credits note when a piece was a team effort. After Effects and Illustrator are the core tools; Cinema 4D or Blender adds 3D capability, and Lottie experience is valued by app and product teams.
Freshers can build a strong reel from personal projects, such as animated data explainers, title sequences for imaginary films or motion versions of popular Indian ads. A common mistake is presenting marketplace templates as your own work; creative directors spot them quickly. Also avoid listing every plugin and keep your resume itself simple enough for ATS parsing.
Format and template for creative resumes
Creative hiring in India usually starts with your work, not your resume. Put a clickable portfolio, showreel or clips link in the header next to your phone number and email, and check that it opens without a login or an access request. Behance and Dribbble work well for designers, a personal website or Vimeo suits video and animation, and a Google Drive folder is fine only if sharing is set to anyone with the link.
The resume itself still passes through Naukri, LinkedIn or an agency's applicant tracking system, so balance visual style with readability. Keep all text as real text rather than text inside images, use standard headings such as Experience, Skills and Education, and stick to one or two accent colours. Name your software and specialisation clearly, add numbers to your projects and keep it to one or two pages. Our how to make a resume guide covers the basics.
