Quantify the value a quantity surveyor manages
A quantity surveyor is hired to protect money, so your resume should show the value of projects and contracts you have handled. Mention the project portfolio value, monthly billing you certify and the types of projects. "RA bills of ₹12 to ₹18 crore a month across 4 residential projects" is far more useful than "responsible for billing".
Make clear which side you have worked on: developer or client side, contractor side or cost consultancy. Client-side QS roles focus on cost plans, tendering and checking bills, while contractor-side roles focus on preparing bills, variations and claims. Many recruiters prefer a candidate from the same side, so state it plainly in your summary.
Savings, claims and final accounts
The best QS bullets show money saved or recovered and records closed on time. Good measures include savings against budget, over-billing prevented, claims settled, variations approved and final accounts closed within a set period.
- Saved ₹14 crore against budget through tendering and value engineering.
- Settled claims of ₹9.5 crore at ₹3.1 crore with records and contract clauses.
- Closed 3 final accounts within 4 months of handover.
Avoid listing only tasks like "preparation of BOQ". Pair each task with an outcome. Mention the contract forms you have worked with, such as item-rate, lump-sum, EPC or FIDIC, because contract knowledge separates senior surveyors from estimators.
Tools, measurement standards and starting out
List measurement and estimating tools you use, such as CostX, Planswift, AutoCAD for take-off and advanced Excel, plus ERP modules for billing. Mention IS 1200 for measurement, and the CPWD or state schedule of rates if you prepare estimates for government work. Knowledge of RICS or FIDIC practices helps for Gulf and international roles.
Civil engineering freshers can enter QS through billing or estimation trainee roles. Show your quantity estimation project, any internship where you prepared measurement sheets and your Excel skills. Accuracy is everything in this job, so proofread every number on your resume, and keep formatting tidy, because a careless resume suggests careless bills. Be ready to explain one rate analysis line by line, as many interviews include a short practical test.
Format and template for engineering resumes
Plant heads, project managers and HR teams at manufacturing, infrastructure and EPC companies usually shortlist from Naukri, LinkedIn or a referral, often on a phone between shifts or site visits. A clean, single-column layout with clear headings such as Summary, Technical Skills, Experience, Projects, Education and Certifications works best, and it also passes applicant tracking systems used by larger groups.
Lead each job with the plant, site or product you handled: "two-wheeler chassis line, 1,200 units a day" or "G+14 residential tower, 2.1 lakh sq ft". Then show results in numbers recruiters understand: OEE, PPM rejection, downtime hours, cost saved, schedule met, safe man-hours. List software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, STAAD.Pro, SAP, Primavera) and standards (IS codes, ISO 9001, IATF 16949) by their exact names. Keep it to one page under five years of experience and two pages after that. A photo and date of birth are optional; leave them out unless the employer asks.
