Order an assistant professor CV the way committees score it

College and university selection committees in India follow UGC regulations and often score candidates on qualifications, teaching experience, research and other contributions. Make each of these easy to find. Put your highest degree, UGC NET, JRF or SET and the year near the top, then teaching experience with subjects and levels, then research.

Your summary should state your discipline, years of teaching, PhD status and publication count in two lines. "Assistant Professor of Commerce, 8 years, PhD in Finance, UGC NET-JRF, 9 papers including 4 Scopus" is exactly what a screening clerk is checking against the eligibility table. An academic CV can run to three or four pages, but the first page must carry these facts.

Listing publications, research and academic service

Create a separate Publications section with full citations: authors, title, journal, volume, year and whether it is Scopus, Web of Science or UGC CARE listed. Committees discount papers in unlisted or predatory journals, so be selective. Add books, chapters, patents, funded projects and conference presentations under their own headings.

Teaching evidence matters too. Strong bullets show the courses you teach, weekly load, results and mentoring:

  • Raised the Cost Accounting pass rate from 71% to 89% with weekly tutorials.
  • Guided 22 M.Com. dissertations and 3 student conference papers.

Do not forget institutional work. NAAC or NBA criterion coordination, IQAC duties, organising FDPs, placement coordination and examination work are all scored in many API-style evaluations.

Assistant professor tips for new PhDs and NET-qualified freshers

If you are applying for your first faculty post, lead with NET/SET or JRF, your PhD topic and status (submitted, awarded or pursuing) and your strongest publications. Teaching assistantships, guest lectures, demonstration classes during your PhD and online course mentoring count as teaching experience; say how many hours or classes.

Prepare for the demo lecture. Many colleges ask candidates to teach a 15-minute topic, so list two or three subjects you can teach confidently.

Common mistakes:

  • Mixing school-style personal details with academic records and leaving out publication indexing.
  • Listing every conference attended rather than those where you presented.
  • Copying a long research statement into the CV instead of a short research-interests line.
  • Missing dates for NET, PhD registration and award, which affect eligibility and pay fixation.

Keep formatting plain and consistent so committee members can compare candidates side by side.

Format and template for teaching resumes

Schools and colleges in India still read many resumes on paper or as printed PDFs, so a clean, traditional layout works better than heavy colour or graphics. Use clear headings such as Summary, Teaching Experience, Education, Eligibility and Certifications, Skills and Co-curricular Activities.

Put the facts a principal checks first near the top: the classes you teach (pre-primary, PRT, TGT or PGT), your subject, and the boards you know, such as CBSE, ICSE/ISC, IB, Cambridge or a state board. List B.Ed., D.El.Ed., B.P.Ed. or NTT clearly, along with CTET, state TET, UGC NET or SET results and the year you qualified. Mention demo classes, smart-class tools and board results only with real numbers.

Keep the resume to one page for freshers and two pages for experienced teachers. A photo is optional unless the school format asks for one. Compare your draft with our teacher resume example before you send it.

Frequently asked questions

For most colleges and universities, you need UGC NET, a state SET or a PhD awarded under UGC regulations. Check the specific advertisement because private and deemed universities may also set their own rules.
Academic CVs are longer than corporate resumes; three to five pages is normal once you add publications and service. Keep the first page focused on qualifications, experience and research highlights.
List them only if they are peer reviewed and genuine. Mark Scopus, Web of Science or UGC CARE indexing clearly so committees can count qualifying papers.
