What QC labs look for in a B.Sc Chemistry fresher

Pharma, API and chemical plants in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana and Himachal Pradesh hire many B.Sc freshers each year as QC trainees, lab chemists and production officers. Their first question is simple: can you work safely and accurately in a regulated lab? Your resume should answer that before the recruiter reaches your hobbies.

Name the instruments and techniques you have actually handled: titrations, UV-Vis, Karl Fischer, pH meter, HPLC sample preparation or GC. Write "Performed KF moisture tests on 120 raw material samples" rather than "knowledge of instrumentation". If you only observed an instrument during training, write "exposure to HPLC" so you are not caught out in the interview.

Showing GLP and documentation discipline

In a regulated lab, a test that is not recorded properly did not happen. QC managers value freshers who understand good laboratory practice, data integrity and SOP-driven work. Say it directly:

  • Recorded results in controlled logbooks following GLP.
  • Maintained daily calibration records for balances and pH meters.
  • Followed MSDS and PPE rules while handling solvents.

These lines are short but signal that you will not need basic retraining. If your college ran a GLP or lab safety workshop, list it under certifications with the month and year. Interviewers at regulated plants also like freshers who know the basics of ALCOA data integrity principles and why a crossed-out reading must be signed and dated rather than overwritten.

B.Sc specialisation, projects and other career paths

Put your major and minor subjects in the education line, because a chemistry major is screened differently from a microbiology or physics major. Microbiology graduates should highlight sterility testing, media preparation and microbial limit tests instead of HPLC.

Your final-year project helps if it involved lab work; give the method, the instrument and the result, such as a removal percentage or yield. B.Sc graduates also apply for non-lab roles such as medical representative, clinical data entry or bank back-office jobs. For those, create a separate version that leads with communication and computer skills rather than instruments. Keep Class 10 and Class 12 marks visible, as pharma campus drives often ask for 55 to 60% throughout.

Format and template for fresher resumes

Recruiters at campus drives and on Naukri spend only a few seconds on a fresher resume, so keep it to one page. Because you have little or no work history, put Education right after a two-line summary: degree, college, university, year and CGPA or percentage, followed by Class 12 and Class 10 rows with board and marks. Many Indian employers still screen on a 60% or 6.0 CGPA cut-off across 10th, 12th and graduation, so missing marks look like you are hiding something.

Next come Projects and Internships, which is where you prove skills. Give each project a title, your role, the tools used and one measurable result. Then add certifications (NPTEL, Tally, NSDC, Google), skills, achievements and languages. Before a campus placement season, build one master resume and adjust the summary and skill order for each job description. See our resume for freshers guide and the fresher templates.

Frequently asked questions

Common roles are QC chemist trainee, lab chemist, production officer trainee, R&D assistant and QA documentation assistant in pharma, API, paint, fertiliser and specialty chemical companies.
Yes, but describe your level honestly, for example "HPLC sample preparation and exposure to runs". Interviewers often ask about column types and system suitability, so prepare for basic questions.
No. Many QC and production trainee roles accept B.Sc graduates, though some R&D and method development roles prefer an M.Sc. Industrial training and clean documentation habits help you compete.
