What plant HR looks for in a diploma engineering fresher

Manufacturing companies, EPC contractors and maintenance service firms hire diploma holders for hands-on roles: junior engineer, technician, shift supervisor trainee or apprentice under the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS). Their hiring managers want to know whether you can read a drawing, use basic test instruments and follow safety rules on the shop floor.

Put your branch, board (MSBTE, DTE, SBTET and so on), year and percentage in the summary. Then list practical skills that match your branch: wiring, testing and motor control for electrical; machining, measuring instruments and drawings for mechanical; surveying, levelling and site supervision for civil.

Writing in-plant training like real shop-floor work

Most polytechnics require six weeks of in-plant or industrial training, yet many students write only "completed training at XYZ". Instead, describe what you actually did:

  • "Assisted wiring of 14 MCC and APFC panels as per control wiring diagrams."
  • "Carried out megger and continuity tests on 60+ feeders before dispatch."
  • "Updated 9 panel drawings in AutoCAD Electrical."

Mention safety practices such as LOTO, PPE and permit-to-work. Plant supervisors worry more about safety than about theory marks, and a fresher who already speaks that language stands out. If the plant gave you a training completion certificate, list it with the department name and dates, because HR teams often ask for a copy during document verification.

Diploma projects, lateral entry and further study

A working final-year project with a measurable result, such as power factor improved from 0.72 to 0.95, gives the interviewer an easy topic to discuss. Include the components or software used and any prize at a polytechnic exhibition.

If you plan to take lateral entry into a B.Tech or B.E., you can still apply for jobs; keep the resume focused on the role and discuss study plans only if asked. Many diploma holders complete a part-time degree later while working. Include your Class 10 board and percentage, since companies with apprentice and trainee schemes use it for eligibility. Use a simple ATS-friendly layout for the career portals of large manufacturers.

Format and template for fresher resumes

Recruiters at campus drives and on Naukri spend only a few seconds on a fresher resume, so keep it to one page. Because you have little or no work history, put Education right after a two-line summary: degree, college, university, year and CGPA or percentage, followed by Class 12 and Class 10 rows with board and marks. Many Indian employers still screen on a 60% or 6.0 CGPA cut-off across 10th, 12th and graduation, so missing marks look like you are hiding something.

Next come Projects and Internships, which is where you prove skills. Give each project a title, your role, the tools used and one measurable result. Then add certifications (NPTEL, Tally, NSDC, Google), skills, achievements and languages. Before a campus placement season, build one master resume and adjust the summary and skill order for each job description. See our resume for freshers guide and the fresher templates.
