Data Scientist Resume Example for India

This data scientist resume sample shows how to present machine learning models, experiments and business results so analytics leaders and recruiters see more than a list of algorithms.

Work experience

Data Scientist, Golconda Analytics Pvt Ltd, Hyderabad

Apr 2024 – Present

  • Built an XGBoost credit-risk model for a two-wheeler loan portfolio, lifting Gini from 0.41 to 0.56 and reducing 90+ DPD defaults by about 14% over two quarters.
  • Developed an NLP pipeline that classifies 25,000 monthly customer complaints into 18 categories with 89% accuracy, cutting manual tagging effort by 70%.
  • Deployed models as FastAPI services with MLflow tracking and set up weekly drift monitoring.
  • Present model results and cut-off recommendations to risk and business heads every month.

Associate Data Scientist, Deccan Telecom Insights, Hyderabad

Jul 2023 – Mar 2024

  • Built a churn-prediction model for prepaid users; targeted retention offers reduced monthly churn in the pilot circle from 3.2% to 2.6%.
  • Wrote SQL and PySpark pipelines to create features from 40 million monthly call and recharge records.
  • Designed A/B tests for retention campaigns and reported uplift with confidence intervals.

Lead with business problems, not algorithms

Data science hiring managers in India read many resumes that list "Linear Regression, Random Forest, CNN, LSTM" without explaining what problem was solved. Start each project or job bullet with the business question instead: predicting loan defaults, reducing churn, forecasting demand or classifying complaints. Then name the method and the result.

Your summary should mention your domain (BFSI, telecom, retail or healthcare), your core stack and whether you have deployed models into production. Production experience is a major filter, because many candidates have only notebook projects. If you have presented results to business teams, say so; data scientists who can explain a model to a credit head or marketing manager are in short supply.

Quantify model performance and business impact

Good data science bullets carry two numbers: a model metric and a business metric.

  • Weak: Built a credit risk model using XGBoost.
  • Strong: Built an XGBoost credit-risk model that lifted Gini from 0.41 to 0.56 and cut 90+ DPD defaults by about 14%.
  • Weak: Worked on NLP for customer complaints.
  • Strong: Classified 25,000 monthly complaints into 18 categories with 89% accuracy, reducing manual tagging by 70%.

Choose metrics that fit the problem: AUC, Gini or KS for credit models, precision and recall for imbalanced classes, MAPE for forecasting. Mention data scale too, such as rows, records or users, because it shows whether you have handled real-world volumes.

Projects, Kaggle and generative AI on a data scientist resume

Freshers and career switchers should choose two or three end-to-end projects over a long list of course notebooks. A strong project has a clear question, a real or realistic dataset, data cleaning, a baseline model, an improved model, honest evaluation and, ideally, a simple deployed app or API. Kaggle rankings help if they are notable; otherwise describe what you learned rather than listing a participation badge.

Generative AI and LLM work is in demand, but only list it if you have built something, such as a retrieval-based question-answering tool over company documents, with notes on how you evaluated it. Statistics graduates should highlight hypothesis testing and experimental design. For analytics-heavy roles, also see our data analyst resume example.

Format and template for IT resumes

Most IT applications in India go through Naukri, LinkedIn, company career portals or a vendor's applicant tracking system before a human reads them. Use a clean, single-column or light two-column layout with standard headings such as Summary, Skills, Experience, Projects, Education and Certifications, so the parser can read every section.

Keep the resume to one page if you have under four years of experience and two pages after that. Put your tech stack near the top, but group it (Languages, Frameworks, Databases, Cloud and Tools) instead of listing thirty logos. Add your GitHub, portfolio or LinkedIn link only if it is up to date. Leave out photo, date of birth, marital status and a declaration unless an employer specifically asks for them. Read our ATS-friendly resume guide before you upload to a job portal.

Turn this sample into your own resume

Use this sample for structure and wording ideas, then replace every line with your own employers, dates, tools and results. Interviewers can ask about anything on your resume, so keep each claim specific and true.

Frequently asked questions

No, though an M.Sc., M.Tech or analytics-focused MBA helps. Many data scientists come from B.Tech or B.Sc. backgrounds and prove their skills through strong projects and analyst experience.
Include them if you achieved a good rank or learned a technique you can discuss in detail. A participation-only entry adds little.
A data analyst resume focuses on SQL, dashboards and business reporting. A data scientist resume should show predictive modelling, statistics, experimentation and, ideally, model deployment.
