Lead with your equity research coverage universe

Heads of research hire for sectors. State the sectors you cover, the number of companies and whether you work on the sell side (brokerage) or buy side (AMC, PMS, insurance or family office). "Equity research analyst covering 14 auto ancillary and capital goods companies on the sell side" tells a hiring manager exactly where you fit.

If you have a relevant technical or industry background, such as an engineering degree for capital goods or pharmacy for healthcare, highlight it. It helps you read plant data, technology shifts and management commentary faster than generalist analysts.

Mention whether you work alone on a sector or under a lead analyst. Being honest about your role in coverage protects you in interviews and helps employers place you at the right level.

Show report output and the accuracy of your calls

Research is judged on output and outcome. Count initiating coverage reports, result notes and thematic reports, and show how your estimates and recommendations performed.

  • Weak: "Wrote research reports on companies."
  • Strong: "Published 5 initiating coverage reports and 90+ result updates."
  • Strong: "5 of 6 buy ideas outperformed the Nifty by 8 to 22 points over 12 months."

Be honest and consistent about time frames and benchmarks; interviewers will check. Mention management meetings, plant visits and client marketing as well, because sell-side analysts must sell their ideas.

Compliance, certifications and samples for research roles

SEBI rules require research analysts at registered entities to hold the NISM Series XV certification, so list it with the year. CFA levels, CA or an MBA in finance strengthen your profile, especially for buy-side roles.

Freshers should prepare one strong sample report on a listed company, with a model, valuation and clear recommendation, and mention it as a project. Avoid publishing stock tips on social media in a way that may conflict with compliance rules, and never include confidential client portfolios. If you write a public blog or newsletter on markets, mention it only if it follows disclosure norms and shows serious analysis. Keep the resume to one page, and use the ATS-friendly resume guide to format it cleanly.

Format and template for finance and banking resumes

Finance recruiters, bank HR teams and CA firm partners expect a conservative, easy-to-audit resume. Use a single-column or restrained two-column layout with standard headings: Summary, Key Skills, Experience, Education, Professional Qualifications and Certifications. Avoid heavy colour, graphics and skill bars, because many banks and NBFCs screen applications through an applicant tracking system first.

Put professional qualifications (CA, CMA, CS, CFA, NISM, IRDAI, IIBF) near the top with the level cleared and the year, and add your membership number only if the role requires it. Write numbers the Indian way, in lakh and crore, and attach a scale to every bullet: portfolio size, number of ledgers, loan files, audit observations or closing days. Keep it to one page for under five years of experience and two pages for managers. Leave out photo, date of birth and a declaration unless the employer asks. Before uploading to Naukri or a bank portal, check the ATS-friendly resume guide.
