Fashion designer resumes for export houses vs brands
Fashion jobs in India fall into two broad worlds, and your resume should speak to the one you are applying for. Export houses in Noida, Gurugram, Tiruppur, Jaipur and Bengaluru want designers who can read buyer briefs, build accurate tech packs, manage sampling and meet approval dates. D2C labels and retail brands care more about trend research, range planning and sell-through.
Mention the category you design for (women's ethnic, menswear, kidswear, knits, home textiles) and the markets you serve, such as UK, US or domestic online buyers. "Designer for women's ethnic and fusion wear for UK and Australian buyers" instantly tells a merchandiser where you fit.
Turning collections into measurable bullets
Fashion results can be counted in styles, approvals, sampling rounds, timelines and sales. Use these numbers instead of describing yourself as "creative" or "trend-aware".
- Weak: "Designed garments according to latest trends."
- Strong: "Buyers picked 38 of 60 proposed styles for the SS26 line."
- Strong: "Reduced sample correction rounds from 3 to about 1.5 per style with accurate tech packs."
If you work with craft clusters, block printers, embroiderers or handloom weavers, name the craft and the region. Knowledge of Indian textiles and surface techniques is a real strength that buyers and brands value. Mention compliance knowledge too, such as buyer testing standards or restricted-substance requirements, if you have handled them for export orders.
Portfolio, graduation collection and software
Add a portfolio link with your best collections, illustrations, tech pack samples and photos of finished garments. Keep the PDF version compact and lead with work that matches the employer, for example structured tech packs for an export house.
Freshers from design institutes should highlight their graduation collection, craft documentation project and industry internship, and mention any jury awards or buyer selections. Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop are expected, while CLO 3D is increasingly requested for virtual sampling. A common mistake is listing every subject studied; instead, show practical skills such as pattern making, draping, grading and fabric costing that the employer will use from day one.
Format and template for creative resumes
Creative hiring in India usually starts with your work, not your resume. Put a clickable portfolio, showreel or clips link in the header next to your phone number and email, and check that it opens without a login or an access request. Behance and Dribbble work well for designers, a personal website or Vimeo suits video and animation, and a Google Drive folder is fine only if sharing is set to anyone with the link.
The resume itself still passes through Naukri, LinkedIn or an agency's applicant tracking system, so balance visual style with readability. Keep all text as real text rather than text inside images, use standard headings such as Experience, Skills and Education, and stick to one or two accent colours. Name your software and specialisation clearly, add numbers to your projects and keep it to one or two pages. Our how to make a resume guide covers the basics.
Turn this sample into your own resume
Use this sample for structure and wording ideas, then replace every line with your own employers, dates, tools and results. Interviewers can ask about anything on your resume, so keep each claim specific and true.
