Show your IRDAI licence and product lines first

Insurance companies cannot let you sell without a valid IRDAI licence, so recruiters check it before anything else. Put the licence type (life, general, health or composite) and the year in the Certifications section, and mention "IRDAI-licensed" in your summary.

Then say which products you sell: term, endowment, ULIP, pension, health floaters, motor or SME covers. Agency managers and bancassurance heads hire for specific product lines, and a clear list helps them see fit quickly. If you are moving from life to health or general insurance, highlight the needs-analysis and claims skills that transfer.

Also mention your territory and the customer segments you know, such as salaried families, doctors, shop owners or farmers, because insurers build agency teams around local markets.

Persistency matters as much as new premium

Many insurance advisor resumes only talk about sales. Insurers care just as much about whether your policies stay in force, because lapses hurt customers and the company. Include both numbers.

  • Weak: "Achieved targets and sold many policies."
  • Strong: "Sell 130 to 150 policies a year with first-year premium of about ₹1.3 crore."
  • Strong: "Keep 13th-month persistency at 92%, above the branch average."

Add claims support, revivals and low free-look cancellations. These show ethical selling and good client servicing. If you have earned club memberships, MDRT qualification or company convention awards, list them briefly with the year.

Moving into insurance sales as a fresher or career switcher

Freshers and career switchers can start as agency advisors or bancassurance sales officers. Show customer-facing experience from retail, telecom or banking sales, any referrals you generated and your comfort with local languages. Mention that you have cleared the IRDAI pre-licensing exam or are ready to take it.

Avoid exaggerated claims such as "guaranteed returns" anywhere in your resume, and keep the tone professional. Hiring managers prefer simple, honest numbers. If you also do financial awareness sessions in your community, mention them; they show how you generate leads. List any regional languages you speak, because explaining policy terms in a client's own language builds trust. For help describing sales achievements, see the experience writing guide.

Format and template for finance and banking resumes

Finance recruiters, bank HR teams and CA firm partners expect a conservative, easy-to-audit resume. Use a single-column or restrained two-column layout with standard headings: Summary, Key Skills, Experience, Education, Professional Qualifications and Certifications. Avoid heavy colour, graphics and skill bars, because many banks and NBFCs screen applications through an applicant tracking system first.

Put professional qualifications (CA, CMA, CS, CFA, NISM, IRDAI, IIBF) near the top with the level cleared and the year, and add your membership number only if the role requires it. Write numbers the Indian way, in lakh and crore, and attach a scale to every bullet: portfolio size, number of ledgers, loan files, audit observations or closing days. Keep it to one page for under five years of experience and two pages for managers. Leave out photo, date of birth and a declaration unless the employer asks. Before uploading to Naukri or a bank portal, check the ATS-friendly resume guide.
