Put a deal sheet on your investment banking analyst resume

In investment banking, your deals are your track record. List the mandates you worked on with the deal type, sector, approximate size and status: "Sell-side M&A, specialty chemicals, ₹1,150 crore, closed". If a deal is confidential or unannounced, describe it without the name, as every bank does.

Separate live and closed deals honestly. Interviewers at boutiques and global banks will ask about every transaction you list, including your exact role in modelling, diligence or drafting, so include only deals you can discuss in depth.

Keep the resume to one page. Senior bankers often read a stack of analyst resumes in a few minutes, and a tight page with deal facts, education and modelling skills is what they expect. Use a conservative font and avoid colour blocks or photos.

Valuation and modelling bullets that bankers trust

Name the models you built and how they were used. "Built DCF and trading comparables models that set the valuation range presented to 3 client boards" shows ownership. "Worked on financial models" does not.

  • Weak: "Assisted seniors in preparing presentations."
  • Strong: "Drafted 25+ pitch books and 4 information memoranda for sector coverage and live mandates."
  • Strong: "Prepared buyer lists of 60+ strategic and PE investors and tracked outreach."

Also show process skills: managing data rooms, due diligence trackers and coordination with lawyers and auditors. These are daily analyst tasks and prove you can run an execution workstream.

Breaking into investment banking from campus or another role

Most analysts join from MBA, CA or top commerce and engineering programmes, so list academic scores, ranks and CFA levels clearly. Mention SEBI-related exposure such as DRHP drafting only if you actually contributed to it.

If you are moving from Big 4 transaction advisory, equity research or corporate finance, lead with transferable deal work: valuations, due diligence and sector reports. Freshers can add a self-built valuation of a recent IPO or acquisition, case competition wins and finance club roles. Bloomberg, Capitaline, Prowess or PitchBook experience is a useful keyword set. Format and template for finance and banking resumes

Finance recruiters, bank HR teams and CA firm partners expect a conservative, easy-to-audit resume. Use a single-column or restrained two-column layout with standard headings: Summary, Key Skills, Experience, Education, Professional Qualifications and Certifications. Avoid heavy colour, graphics and skill bars, because many banks and NBFCs screen applications through an applicant tracking system first.

Put professional qualifications (CA, CMA, CS, CFA, NISM, IRDAI, IIBF) near the top with the level cleared and the year, and add your membership number only if the role requires it. Write numbers the Indian way, in lakh and crore, and attach a scale to every bullet: portfolio size, number of ledgers, loan files, audit observations or closing days. Keep it to one page for under five years of experience and two pages for managers. Leave out photo, date of birth and a declaration unless the employer asks. Before uploading to Naukri or a bank portal, check the ATS-friendly resume guide.
