What editors look for in a journalist resume

News editors read journalist resumes for three things: your beat, your languages and proof that you can file accurate copy on deadline. State all three in your summary, for example "civic and agriculture reporter writing in Marathi and English for print and digital". Mention whether you have worked in print, TV, digital or a combination, because newsroom workflows differ a lot.

Add links to five or six of your best bylines or a clips page, and choose stories that show range: one breaking news piece, one investigation or data story and one feature. If you hold government press accreditation, mention it, as it shows you are trusted to cover official events.

Show the impact of your stories, not just your beat

Many reporters list only the beats they covered. Stronger resumes explain what changed because of the reporting: an official response, a policy review, follow-ups by other outlets or strong reader numbers.

  • Weak: "Covered politics and civic issues in Nagpur."
  • Strong: "Broke an RTI-based series on delayed crop-insurance payouts that 3 state-level outlets followed up."
  • Strong: "12 stories crossed 5 lakh page views on the news portal in 2025."

Volume matters too. Editors like to see filing rates such as stories per week or bylines per year, especially for city and district reporting roles where speed and consistency are essential. Awards, fellowships and stories picked up by national outlets are also worth a short line.

Languages, digital tools and journalism freshers

Regional-language journalism in Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali and other languages is a large and growing market, especially on digital platforms. Rate your languages honestly, and if you can type in Unicode or Inscript, say so, because many desks expect reporters to file directly on the CMS.

Digital newsrooms also look for SEO headline writing, live blogging, mobile video and basic data tools such as Google Sheets or Datawrapper. Freshers from mass communication or journalism courses should list internships, campus publications and any freelance pieces that were actually published. Avoid filler such as "good communication skills"; your clips prove that far better.

Format and template for creative resumes

Creative hiring in India usually starts with your work, not your resume. Put a clickable portfolio, showreel or clips link in the header next to your phone number and email, and check that it opens without a login or an access request. Behance and Dribbble work well for designers, a personal website or Vimeo suits video and animation, and a Google Drive folder is fine only if sharing is set to anyone with the link.

The resume itself still passes through Naukri, LinkedIn or an agency's applicant tracking system, so balance visual style with readability. Keep all text as real text rather than text inside images, use standard headings such as Experience, Skills and Education, and stick to one or two accent colours. Name your software and specialisation clearly, add numbers to your projects and keep it to one or two pages. Our how to make a resume guide covers the basics.

Turn this sample into your own resume

Use this sample for structure and wording ideas, then replace every line with your own employers, dates, tools and results. Interviewers can ask about anything on your resume, so keep each claim specific and true.
