What senior advocates and law firms look for in an LLB fresher

Litigation chambers, law firms, in-house legal teams and legal process outsourcing companies all hire law graduates, but they read resumes differently. A senior advocate wants drafting and court exposure; a corporate law firm wants research quality, a strong academic record and transactional internships; an in-house team wants contracts and compliance. Decide which path you are applying for and order your internships accordingly.

Mention your enrolment with the State Bar Council and your All India Bar Examination (AIBE) status near the top. If you have cleared the AIBE, say so; if enrolment or the exam is pending, say when you expect it. Firms will ask, and a clear answer saves time.

Writing law internships with drafting and research detail

Law students often list ten internships in one line each, which tells the reader very little. Pick your three or four most relevant internships and describe the actual work:

• "Drafted 14 writ petitions and counter affidavits in service matters for senior review."
• "Researched 60+ judgments on SCC Online and Manupatra and prepared case briefs."
• "Prepared lists of dates and synopses for 6 appeals."

Name the forum (High Court, district court, NCLT or consumer commission) and the area of law. Group the remaining short internships into a single line so the page stays clean. Never mention confidential client names or case details.

Moots, publications and legal skills on an LLB resume

Moot courts, legal aid work and published papers show advocacy and research ability. Mention the rank or award, the number of teams and the subject area. A paper in a law review or a well-researched note on a recent judgment is worth listing with the title and month.

In the skills section, list research databases and the areas of law you are comfortable with, using current terminology. Criminal law freshers, for example, should be familiar with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, BNSS and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, which replaced the IPC, CrPC and Evidence Act. Keep the resume to one page, include Class 10 and 12 marks for firms with academic cut-offs, and use a conservative layout such as the professional templates.

Format and template for fresher resumes

Recruiters at campus drives and on Naukri spend only a few seconds on a fresher resume, so keep it to one page. Because you have little or no work history, put Education right after a two-line summary: degree, college, university, year and CGPA or percentage, followed by Class 12 and Class 10 rows with board and marks. Many Indian employers still screen on a 60% or 6.0 CGPA cut-off across 10th, 12th and graduation, so missing marks look like you are hiding something.

Next come Projects and Internships, which is where you prove skills. Give each project a title, your role, the tools used and one measurable result. Then add certifications (NPTEL, Tally, NSDC, Google), skills, achievements and languages.
