What garment exporters check on a merchandiser resume

Export houses in Tiruppur, Ludhiana, Noida, Gurugram and Bengaluru hire merchandisers by product and buyer market. Tiruppur is mostly cotton knitwear, Ludhiana is known for woollen and winter knitwear, while NCR and Bengaluru have more woven and fashion units. State your product (knits, wovens, denim, sweaters, home textiles), the buyer countries and the type of buyers (brands, retailers, buying houses).

Also give the volume and value you handle. "Merchandiser with 5 years in knitwear for UK and German buyers, managing 150,000 pieces a month" is exactly what a factory owner wants to read. Note whether you work for a manufacturing exporter or a buying house, as the daily work is quite different.

Show sampling, costing and on-time shipment

A merchandiser is judged on whether orders ship on time, at the right cost and without quality claims. Strong bullets prove one of these:

• On-time shipment percentage across a season.
• Sample approval rate or reduction in rejections.
• Costing accuracy and the share of quoted styles you won.
• Air-freight or discount claims avoided.

Mention the full order cycle you manage: enquiry, costing, tech pack, lab dips, proto, fit and PP samples, TNA, inline and final inspection, and shipment. If you work with buyer-nominated inspection agencies or compliance audits, add it, because senior merchandisers must coordinate these without delaying production.

Merchandiser skills, education and career steps

Most merchandisers have a degree or diploma in fashion technology, apparel production or textiles, though many commerce graduates learn on the job. List practical skills: reading tech packs, BOM preparation, FOB and CMT costing, Excel trackers and the garment ERP your company uses. Basic knowledge of export documents, Incoterms such as FOB and CIF, and compliance audits is a plus.

Freshers should highlight internships at an export house or buying office, college projects on costing or sampling, and good written English, since buyer emails are a daily task. Assistant merchandisers aiming for senior roles should show buyer accounts handled independently and problems solved, such as recovering a delayed order. Keep the resume to one or two pages.

Operations and supply chain hiring in India is driven by numbers: on-time dispatch, inventory accuracy, cost per shipment, fill rate, OTIF and audit scores. Use a clean single-column layout with standard headings (Summary, Skills, Experience, Education, Certifications) so Naukri, LinkedIn and company ATS tools can parse it, and let each experience bullet carry at least one measurable result.
