What preschools look for in a pre-primary teacher

Preschool owners and pre-primary coordinators hire for warmth, patience and safe routines as much as for teaching skill. Your resume still needs to prove those qualities with facts. Open with your training (Montessori diploma, NTT, ECCE or D.El.Ed.), the age groups you have handled (Playgroup, Nursery, LKG, UKG) and your class size.

Mention spoken languages early. Many preschools want teachers who speak clear English with children but can also reassure parents in the local language, such as Telugu, Kannada, Marathi or Hindi. A line such as "Montessori-trained, 3 years with Nursery to UKG, classes of 20 to 25" tells the school exactly where you fit.

Describing early-years progress without exam scores

Small children do not sit board exams, so show progress through milestones you tracked.

  • Weak: "Taught rhymes, colours and alphabets to kids."
  • Strong: "Brought 21 of 24 UKG children to blending three-letter words through daily sound games."
  • Strong: "Created 40+ sensory and fine-motor activities from low-cost materials."

Settling-in plans, observation records, child portfolios, toilet-training support and handling separation anxiety are real skills that parents value. Events also count: annual concerts, Grandparents Day, festival celebrations and sports day for very young children take careful planning. Keep each bullet concrete and avoid baby-talk language on the resume itself.

Safety, training and common pre-primary resume mistakes

Safety is a deal-breaker in early years. Add child first aid, CPR, fire drills, hygiene routines and child protection or POCSO awareness training if you have them. A short line about safe pick-up and drop procedures or supervising outdoor play also reassures employers.

If you are new to teaching, list your Montessori or NTT practice teaching, the number of hours and the age group, and include any experience with children at a day-care, summer camp or family business. Mothers returning to work can mention relevant skills honestly, but keep the focus on training and practice.

Mistakes to avoid:

  • A cartoon-style template that looks unprofessional when printed.
  • No mention of class size or age group.
  • Listing "loves children" as a skill instead of showing what you did.

A simple layout from our professional resume templates works well for preschool applications.

Format and template for teaching resumes

Schools and colleges in India still read many resumes on paper or as printed PDFs, so a clean, traditional layout works better than heavy colour or graphics. Use clear headings such as Summary, Teaching Experience, Education, Eligibility and Certifications, Skills and Co-curricular Activities.

Put the facts a principal checks first near the top: the classes you teach (pre-primary, PRT, TGT or PGT), your subject, and the boards you know, such as CBSE, ICSE/ISC, IB, Cambridge or a state board. List B.Ed., D.El.Ed., B.P.Ed. or NTT clearly, along with CTET, state TET, UGC NET or SET results and the year you qualified. Mention demo classes, smart-class tools and board results only with real numbers.

Keep the resume to one page for freshers and two pages for experienced teachers. A photo is optional unless the school format asks for one. Compare your draft with our teacher resume example before you send it.
