A radio jockey resume needs an air check link

Programming heads at FM stations shortlist RJs by listening, not reading. Put a link to your air check, a 2 to 3 minute telescoped recording of your real on-air links with most of the music cut out, in your resume header. Include a mix of your show opening, a listener call, a brand integration and a topical bit.

State your language and market clearly in the summary. Private FM stations hire for specific cities and languages, so "Tamil RJ for morning drive in Coimbatore" is much more useful than "energetic RJ with great voice". If you have worked with community radio or done casual announcer work with All India Radio, mention it too.

Radio jockey achievements beyond "hosted a show"

Every RJ hosts a show, so your resume must show what you did with it. Mention the slot and duration, the segments you created, brand integrations you voiced, events you anchored and how you grew the show's social media.

  • Weak: "Hosted a daily radio show."
  • Strong: "Host a 4-hour weekday morning drive show in Tamil with listener calls and traffic updates."
  • Strong: "Deliver 30 to 40 live brand integrations a week with zero compliance errors."

Stations earn from advertisers, so clean, creative brand integrations are a real selling point. Social media numbers matter as well, because many stations now judge RJs partly by their Reels and video reach.

Breaking into radio and moving into digital audio

Freshers can build experience through college radio, community radio stations, RJ hunt contests, podcasts and YouTube voice content. Record a mock air check with links you have written yourself, and show you can talk about local news, films, music and city life for your target market.

Experienced RJs moving to podcasts, audio streaming apps or video hosting should highlight scripting, guest interviews, audio editing and audience growth. Adobe Audition and basic playout software are useful to list. Avoid stuffing the resume with generic soft skills such as "good communication"; your air check, scripts and social media numbers prove those better than any adjective.

Format and template for creative resumes

Creative hiring in India usually starts with your work, not your resume. Put a clickable portfolio, showreel or clips link in the header next to your phone number and email, and check that it opens without a login or an access request. Behance and Dribbble work well for designers, a personal website or Vimeo suits video and animation, and a Google Drive folder is fine only if sharing is set to anyone with the link.

The resume itself still passes through Naukri, LinkedIn or an agency's applicant tracking system, so balance visual style with readability. Keep all text as real text rather than text inside images, use standard headings such as Experience, Skills and Education, and stick to one or two accent colours. Name your software and specialisation clearly, add numbers to your projects and keep it to one or two pages. Our how to make a resume guide covers the basics.

An air check is a short recording of your real on-air links with most of the music removed. Stations use it to judge your voice, timing, humour and how you handle listeners and brands.
A degree in mass communication helps but is not mandatory for most private FM roles. Stations focus on your voice, language fluency, local knowledge and air check quality.
