Technical writer resume: prove you can explain products
Documentation managers at Indian software companies and global capability centres judge technical writers on clarity, structure and accuracy. Your resume is your first writing sample, so keep sentences short, use consistent tense and avoid any spelling or formatting errors. A single typo can end your application.
Name the documentation types you have written (API references, user guides, admin manuals, release notes, knowledge-base articles) and the products and audiences they served, such as developers, system administrators or business users. Add a link to two or three public writing samples, or sanitised samples if your work is behind a login.
Recruiters also look for how you work with subject-matter experts. Mention that you interview engineers, attend sprint reviews or test features yourself before writing, because it shows you can produce accurate content without constant hand-holding.
Measuring the impact of your documentation
Documentation work can be measured, and numbers make your resume far stronger. Count endpoints, pages and releases you documented, and look for outcomes such as fewer support tickets, faster publishing, better search success or shorter onboarding time.
- Weak: "Responsible for writing user manuals."
- Strong: "Documented 120+ REST API endpoints from OpenAPI specs for 3 product modules."
- Strong: "Rewrote the onboarding guide; how-to support tickets dropped by 31% over two quarters."
If you improved the process, such as moving to docs-as-code, creating a style guide or setting up review workflows with engineers, give it a bullet because it shows ownership.
Tools and moving into technical writing
Group your tools so they are easy to scan: authoring (Markdown, MadCap Flare, DITA), API (OpenAPI, Swagger, Postman), version control (Git, GitHub) and collaboration (Confluence, Jira). Docs-as-code skills are increasingly requested by product companies, while larger enterprises often still use Flare or DITA-based tools.
Many technical writers in India come from engineering, software testing, support or content writing. If you are switching, show writing you already did, such as test documentation, internal wikis or customer FAQs. Freshers can contribute to open-source documentation and write a sample API guide for a public API. A clean, single-column ATS-friendly layout suits this role best.
Format and template for creative resumes
Creative hiring in India usually starts with your work, not your resume. Put a clickable portfolio, showreel or clips link in the header next to your phone number and email, and check that it opens without a login or an access request. Behance and Dribbble work well for designers, a personal website or Vimeo suits video and animation, and a Google Drive folder is fine only if sharing is set to anyone with the link.
The resume itself still passes through Naukri, LinkedIn or an agency's applicant tracking system, so balance visual style with readability. Keep all text as real text rather than text inside images, use standard headings such as Experience, Skills and Education, and stick to one or two accent colours. Name your software and specialisation clearly, add numbers to your projects and keep it to one or two pages. Our how to make a resume guide covers the basics.
Turn this sample into your own resume
Use this sample for structure and wording ideas, then replace every line with your own employers, dates, tools and results. Interviewers can ask about anything on your resume, so keep each claim specific and true.
