What sales managers check first on a sales executive resume
A sales manager reading your resume wants answers to three questions: what did you sell, to whom, and did you hit your number? Put the product category (consumer durables, FMCG, building materials, insurance), the channel (dealers, retail counters, direct B2B) and your territory in the first line of the summary.
Then show target versus achievement for every job. "Achieved 112% of ₹1.8 crore annual target" is the single most persuasive line on a sales executive resume. If your company tracks monthly or quarterly targets, give the number of periods you crossed 100% instead of claiming you "always exceeded targets".
Recruiters at distributors and consumer brands often shortlist on this single line, so make sure the figure is accurate and that you can explain in an interview how the target was set and how you closed any gaps.
Turning daily field work into strong sales bullets
Most sales executives write duty lists: "visiting dealers", "taking orders", "following up payments". Every applicant does these things, so they do not help you stand out. Rewrite each duty as a result with a number.
- Weak: "Responsible for dealer visits and order booking."
- Strong: "Handled 64 dealer counters and grew secondary sales 18% year on year."
- Weak: "Followed up for payments."
- Strong: "Raised 30-day collections from 71% to 89% across the top 20 dealers."
Good numbers for this role include counters handled, new outlets opened, revenue in ₹ lakh, scheme or product-mix improvements and collection percentages. Our guide on writing resume experience has more examples.
Freshers and career switchers applying for sales jobs
If you are new to sales, recruiters look for confidence, communication and willingness to travel. Mention a two-wheeler and valid driving licence if the job involves field work, and list the local languages you speak, because these directly affect territory allocation.
Show any experience that involved persuading people or handling money: college fest sponsorships, part-time retail work, internships with a distributor or a summer job at a showroom. Add numbers even here, such as "raised ₹60,000 in sponsorships from 11 local businesses".
Avoid vague words like "dynamic" and "go-getter" in the summary. Keep the resume to one page and include CRM or Excel skills only if you have actually used them.
Format and template for sales and marketing resumes
Sales and marketing hiring managers in India decide in seconds whether you can deliver numbers, so your format should push results to the surface. Start with a three-line summary that states your years of experience, the industry you sell or market in (FMCG, SaaS, real estate, BFSI, D2C) and one headline achievement. Follow it with Experience, Skills, Education and Certifications under standard headings so Naukri and company ATS software can read them.
For sales roles, every job should show target versus achievement, revenue in ₹ lakh or crore, territory size and the number of dealers, distributors or accounts you handled. For marketing and content roles, show campaign results, budgets, traffic or lead numbers, and add one portfolio or LinkedIn link instead of attaching samples. Keep it to one page under five years of experience and two pages after that. See how numbers are presented in our digital marketing resume example and check the ATS-friendly resume guide before you apply.
