What restaurant managers want from a steward resume

F&B managers hiring stewards, waiters and captains look for steady attendance, good grooming, menu knowledge and the ability to stay calm during a full service. Your resume should show the type of outlet (coffee shop, fine dining, banquets, bar, room service), the number of covers you handled and the systems you used.

Write "served 60 to 90 covers a shift in a 110-seat all-day dining restaurant" rather than "serving food to guests". If you have worked banquets or weddings, mention the size of the events, because many hotels move stewards between outlets. Clear communication in English and the local language is valued, so list your languages honestly.

Add guest feedback and upselling to your steward bullets

A steward resume often looks the same as hundreds of others. The easiest way to stand out is to show proof that guests and managers noticed your service.

  • Number of times you were named in feedback forms or online reviews.
  • Awards such as Employee of the Month or Best Upseller.
  • Upselling results on beverages, desserts or specials.
  • Billing accuracy and zero cash shortages.

Avoid vague lines such as "excellent communication skills" without proof. A short bullet like "Named in guest feedback 40+ times in a year" says more. If you know wine service, cocktails, Indian regional cuisine or allergen handling, mention it, because it shows you can move up to captain or bartender roles.

Steward resume advice for freshers and cruise or Gulf jobs

Freshers from a craft course, diploma or hotel management degree should put training first: the hotel, the outlets and the months you worked there. Add your course and Class XII details, because many hotels still ask for them at entry level. Keep the resume to one page.

If you are applying to cruise lines or hotels in the Gulf, recruiters expect a passport-ready candidate. Add passport availability, any international training and certificates such as basic food hygiene, first aid or fire safety. Mention flexibility for split shifts, night shifts and festival or wedding seasons. A neat photo is common for guest-facing F&B roles and is usually welcomed by hotel HR teams.

Format and template for hospitality and retail resumes

Hospitality and retail recruiters read quickly, often on a phone between shifts, so a clean one-page layout with clear headings works best. Put your current role, property or store type and years of experience at the top, followed by measurable results such as guest scores, upselling, sales targets or audit ratings.

A professional photo is normal and often expected for guest-facing roles such as cabin crew, front office, guest relations and some luxury retail jobs. Use a recent, well-lit photo in grooming standards similar to the job. For back-office, BPO and kitchen roles, a photo is optional.

List languages with honest levels, because Hindi, English and a regional or foreign language are real advantages with tourists and customers. Mention shift flexibility, night shifts or readiness to relocate in your summary if it is true. For bullet ideas, see our guide on writing resume experience.
